Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) var en engelsk forfatter, født i London. Med romaner som Mrs Dalloway (1925), Til fyret (1927) og Bølgene (1931) er hun en av modernismens mest markante figurer, og regnes i dag som en av 1900-tallets viktigste engelskspråklige forfattere. Romanene hennes er kjennetegnet av en verden av tanker, følelser og sansinger uttrykt med lange, poetiske og glidende setninger, og hun var en av de første som benyttet seg av skriveteknikken "stream of consciousness". Som tenker har Woolf påvirket kvinnebevegelsen i mange land, blant annet med essayet "Et eget rom" (1929).
Mr. og Mrs. Ramsay og deres åtte barn tilbringer sommerferiene i sommerhuset deres på øyen Skye, sammen med nære venner av familien. Første del beskriver det dagligdagse samværet med kjærlighet og konflikter, forholdet mellom kjønnene, ekteskap og barndom, gleder, lengsler og savn. Sentrale og kontrastfulle skikkelser i fortellingen er den omsorgsfulle, kjærlige husmoren Mrs. Ramsay og den frie, ugifte kunstneren Lily Briscoe.
Men tiden går og fører med seg krig, død og forfall. Mange år senere vender den gjenværende delen av familien og enkelte av vennene tilbake til sommerhuset. De gjennomfører nå turen til fyret som ble planlagt i de lykkelige dagene på øyen, og etter flere år får Lily Briscoe endelig fullført maleriet av familien i hagen og fyrtårnet.
Til Fyret er Virgina Woolfs mest autobiografiske roman og er basert på hennes tidligere opplevelser fra barndommen. Samtidig er det en mesterlig universal fortelling. Personenes tanker, følelser og erindringer flyr fra teksten, slik som den gjør i det virkelige liv.
I 1998 fikk Til Fyret plass nummer 15 på Modern Library sin liste over de 100 beste engelskspråklige romaner fra det 20. århundre. Time Magazine kåret i 2005 romanen til en av de 100 beste engelskspråklige romanene siden 1923.
