Publisher's summary

Casting necromancy without ever learning how to isn't supposed to be possible.

A starving orphan girl named Vita is somehow managing it anyway, and she's not sure if this is going to be the solution to her life's problems or a horrifying, spiraling mess of problems she can hardly conceive.

Set in a massive world of floating islands with a dangerous entity known as the Mistwatcher that lurks beneath them, Vigor Mortis pairs adorable charm with haunting fantasy.

great book

thought I wasn't going to like it because I'm a guy and the main char was a girl, thought I might not relate, but it was actually a great book. Penelope voice annoyed me at first but you get use to it. the narrator did a great job with the emotions of the characters! would recommend

Blown away!

So I'm reading this and my wife says you are reading teenage fiction. I'm a hardcore horror fan, and while this is not that, it is quality fantasy. Everything hits home. With the Lovecraftian Elder Gods and monster threats, it skirts the edge of horror. The main character is so likable and her transformation is amazing. Read this book. Hope there is a movie. Thank me later.

not what i was expecting but really great

my only complaint is the weird pauses and tone shifts early on. otherwise, she's the best female narrator I've come across.

Really Really Happy with Book 1!

I wish I didn’t wait so long to listen to this fantasy book! I never felt the pace was slow or got bored when there was a lull in the story. I hope book 2 is just as good

Lullaby to morbid curiosity

This reads like a children's lullaby, a facade of innocence and childlike wonder over a core of true horror. Vivid grey conundrums lead to morbid curiosity for how dark it will go, and it just keeps descending.

10 starving orphans out of 10

Story: FANTASTIC! Extremely creative world and I LOVE the depth of the main character. It's Solo Leveling without the generic male with a classic savior complex.

Narrator: PAY THIS WOMAN MORE MONEY! She gives such personality to characters, it's unbelievable. This book has many parts that I know for certain I would have lost track of who was talking, if it wasnt for Jessica Almasy sassy additions.

Female protagonist: I know it's a problem for many men (I'm still one of them) to settle into a story with a character of the opposite gender. THAT WAS NOT A PROBLEM. There is little to no flirting with the same gender that takes a boring CIS male like me out of the story.

Conclusion: Great twists, Interesting main character, and brought me to tears at least once. (talking about you reflecting pool!)

Fun! When's the next one coming?

I took a chance and enjoyed this book much more than I thought I would. It was a nice change to have a MC way outside the norm of who "they'd cast" for a story like this ...AND to have her written by authors who understand what the perspective/thoughts of the character would be like. The rules/logic for how the world/magic functions also seems to be well thought out and coherent, though not yet fully explored. It'll be interesting to see where they go with it in the next novel.

The audio sample gives you a sense of the protagonist's character and the narrator's talent but, not a good sense of the story you're getting into. Maybe that's a good thing? I liked Jessica Almasy's narration enough that I even went even went to check out her other stuff. 'Very little overlap in what I'd normally be interested in listening to but, I see one or two I might try.
