Only One In The Room

By: Laura Cathcart Robbins
  • Summary

  • Hosted by Laura Cathcart Robbins, a writer and a recovery thriver and survivor, Laura found herself in an all too familiar position. In September 2018, she was the only black woman in the room at Brave Magic, a famed writer’s retreat. After it was over, she wrote about her “only one” experience in The Huffington Post and comments started flooding into her DM. These comments were from people from all races, ethnicities, creeds, and nationalities who had felt “othered”. Laura beautifully interviews a person about their Only One story each episode and addresses as many of those DM’s as possible in the process. In this podcast, you’ll hear raw, vulnerable accounts from people who are, like most of us, just eager to connect. Our hope is that The Only One In The Room will inspire a change of perspective in how we all see and hear each other’s stories. We want you to think twice before judging the person standing next to you at a party, in the pick-up line at school, or in a crowded subway car. This is a podcast for anyone who has ever felt alone in a room full of people – which is to say, that this podcast is for everyone.

  • Jillian Lauren – The Only Journalist Who Interviewed America’s Most Prolific Serial Killer
    Jun 11 2024
Jillian Lauren is a writer, storyteller, adoption advocate, and rock-wife. She is the New York Times best-selling author of the memoirs “Everything You Ever Wanted” and “Some Girls: My Life in a Harem”. She was the only journalist to extensively interview Samuel Little, the most prolific serial killer in American history. Her latest book about the time she spent interviewing Sam Little is called “Behold the Monster: Confronting America’s Most Prolific Serial Killer”. Her writing has appeared in New York Magazine, The New York Times, Vanity Fair, The Los Angeles Times, Elle, The Daily Beast, Salon, and many others.

Laura opens the show by asking Jillian about being an adoption advocate, before getting into her newest book “Behold the Monster”. Jillian talks about how rampant crime was in Los Angeles in the 80s, making it difficult to discover Sam Little as a serial killer. This leads to the kind of victims Sam Little would seek out, and the work that went into finally catching him.

Jillian then discuses visiting Sam Little in prison by having to pretend she was his friend so the guards would let her in. Her extensive time spent with Sam Little led her to solve one of his murders that was previously deemed a cold case.

Before they wrap, Jillian talks about how her interviews with Sam Little negatively affected her home life

  • Scott Talks to David Manheim
    Jun 6 2024
David Manheim is an American podcaster who currently hosts the popular addiction podcast Dopey. Dave slid into the embrace of heroin and stayed there for around 15 years, until just four months before he started the podcast in 2016 with his friend Chris, who he had met in rehab. Unfortunately, Chris died of a drug overdose in 2018, along with many other people who were featured on the podcast over the years.

Laura opens the show by asking David about how he fell into addiction. David explains his love for marijuana, the weed culture, and how working for a weed delivery business eventually led him to acquiring and trying heroin.

David then talks about his former podcast partner Chris, who he had met in rehab. The two started their podcast Dopey together, and put out episodes every week until Chris’ death from a drug overdose in 2018.

This leads David to recall numerous other guests on the Dopey podcast that have also overdosed over the years. After the death of these people, but especially his former host Chris, David talks about how the show has changed and expresses his willingness to continue putting out weekly episodes.
