Publisher's summary
The world was shiny and new, technology had cleaned man’s droppings from the earth, eliminated hunger and disease and ensured that everyone had fit, healthy bodies and long lives. There were colonies on Mars, Luna and in the asteroids. Smart machines relieved humans of dangerous, dirty, and repetitive jobs. Females had committed such an atrocity that no one, man or woman, trusted them now. Female slavery was legal everywhere and women were never educated. Ellie and her twin, Virginia, were beautiful, healthy, intelligent, and poor, like every girl. Their competition was fierce for the rewards were high. The difference was stark: freedom and poverty or slavery and opulence. The only way up was to find a man who would take you. Ellie has found her man, Roger, and is anxious to be his. Virginia, unbeknownst to anyone secretly hates Roger and is plotting his death. She has programmed autodrive cars to target Roger using an archaic technique that is so far undetectable and the attacks continue. Virginia changes tactics and suborns Ellie’s clone into a weapon to attack Roger. The attack fails and Virginia and Ellie’s clone learn the consequences of their action. Slavery, per se, is not their punishment, and is often quite pleasant. They learn the continual arousal and denied release is exquisitely painful without leaving a mark. And when they are finally permitted relief, it is ecstasy beyond description.
