About this listen

A full-length, standalone romance from the New York Times best-selling author of Archer's Voice.

Dirt poor. Hillbilly. Backwoods hick. Mountain folk.

Tenleigh Falyn struggles each day to survive in a small, poverty-stricken coal-mining town where she lives with her sister and mentally ill mother. Her dream of winning the college scholarship given to one student by the local coal company and escaping the harshness of her life keeps her going.

Kyland Barrett lives in the hills, too, and has worked tirelessly - through near starvation, through deep loneliness, against all odds - to win the Tyton Coal Scholarship and leave the town that is full of so much pain.

They're both determined not to form any attachments, but one moment changes everything. What happens when only one person gets to win? When only one person gets to leave? And what happens to the one left behind?

Kyland is a story of desperation and hope, loss and sacrifice, pain and forgiveness, but ultimately a story of deep and unending love.

New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for listeners under the age of 18.

Real story- great narration

Mia has a way to write 'real' stories. I enjoy her books, and even though the story of Kyland and Tenleigh almost broke my poor weak heart, I enjoyed it to.

The book tell the story of two people - dirt poor, who against all odds find hope and love through sacrifices for each other.

Both narrators were great, I particulary enjoyed Stephens performance - it was soulfull, like a poetry reading- which added to the feel of desperate emotional scenes and lighter moments.

So heartbreaking but so worth it

All the feels in this book! So much heartbreak, but filled with the overpowering need to survive the tragedy of their impoverished lives. Kyland and Tenleigh fight hard for themselves and each other. There's a point in the story where I probably not off a few nails, but the angst and anguish made the story so real. Not every HEA is billionaires and setting off I to the sunset, this proved that big happiness can come at any level in life. Stephen Dexter and Erin Mallon were amazing in their performance of this story. The portrayal of the main characters brought this book to life with all the feelings and emotion necessary to make this story touch the heart.

LOVE the book!

Mia Sheridan is one of my absolute favorite authors and I've loved every single one of her books, especially Kyland. So I was excited to listen to the audiobook. I loved the female narrator, but the male voice for Kyland left a lot to be desired. He just didn't sound like Kyland to me, and he was almost feminine in his taking sometimes.

Beautiful Human Story.

Where does Kyland rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

In the top 10 (out of hundreds) The story is beautiful. It highlights a population in our country that are ignored and marginalized.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Kyland?

When Tenleigh finally realized what Kyland had really done and went to him. God, I was SO happy. I loved every single minute. This is my second Mia Sheridan book and this is the second time she has blown me away.

Which character – as performed by Stephen Dexter and Erin Mallon – was your favorite?

Kyland. I loved Kyland. He made an almost impossible decision. While I wish he had a chance to go where he wanted- it made for such an amazing story.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me cry first and then laugh with real happiness for the two wonderful characters who really embody what the American dream looks like.

Any additional comments?

This is one of the most poignant stories I have read this year. So so so beautiful and emotional. 6 Stars!

Loved it

It was the realistic portrayal of the characters and their life struggles and no sugar coating of the sacrifice during some parts of the life to achieve what they wanted to achieve, all wrapped up, almost prettily (be it not for the realism that didn’t bother me at all) in a pink bow of a romantic story.

Sweet Love Story

Most of us take for granted what we have. Beautiful story of love found in a desperate situation. Love for others and heritage. Couldn't put it down! Narration was wonderful!

Great Series!

Such a great story of love and sacrifice during a time when couples in their community did not love or sacrifice. I didn't expect that Kyland would learn to love his roots but I'm glad he did.

I am enjoying this wonderful series of how love can endure the test of time.
