Publisher's summary

Sometimes it's just about being in the right place at the right time...with the right person.

Sarge is the short story of a burgeoning D/s relationship between two space marines stationed on an alien planet where an endless war drags on.

Sergeant Wilkes is a hard man with a long, celebrated military career.

Brawny, tattooed, and utterly submissive, Murphy is just an interesting diversion...until Sarge realises he has found something truly rare.

concise & potent

What made the experience of listening to Sarge the most enjoyable?

The narrator does such a wonderful job of bringing the guys to life. I enjoyed just sitting back and hearing it play out.

What did you like best about this story?

It has futuristic science fiction war action and erotic romance so basically everything.

Which scene was your favorite?

This is a re-read for me. I read the books first and then listened to the audios so I knew them. The scene where Murphy saves Sarge and Sarge sees with Murphy's abilities was touching to me this time around.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

no clue, maybe two men brave war-torn planet to find love... (I'll never get the job of providing tag lines obvs)

Any additional comments?

4.5 stars

Sarge is a sci-fi, futuristic, war, BDSM combo. It's short, but the wording is perfect, no repetition, exactly right for bringing the setting to life in our minds. It contains plenty of action to carry the story solely and the perfect amount of sexuality to hook the reader. It's a romance that isn't overly sweet.

I read this when it first came out and really liked it. I loved the science fiction action and erotica again, but what struck me more when I listened to this audiobook is the relationship. The author is able to convey a deep romance with few words. The narrator portrays the guys perfectly. Sarge and Murphy are in a continuous war with sometimes near death conditions. Both are strong military men, but it's obvious how deeply they care for one another. The outlook is bleak, and they become the light in each others lives.

Hot short

Short hot kinky scifi-military story. Made me want to read the 2nd book as well. Good narration.

Well performed novella

I was a little torn since I'm not comfortable with masochistic humiliation play but it works for them. I didn't think the humiliation storyline was needed but whatever... It's a good military, science fiction story with a HFN ending.

Fabulous Short Story

Where does Sarge rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Top of the list

Who was your favorite character and why?

Murphy - so much to love #TeamMurph

Have you listened to any of Nick J. Russo’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I don’t listen to that many audios these days, but when I saw this was out, and Nick J. Russo was narrating, I one-clicked faster than a speeding bullet. I wasn’t sure if he would be able to pull off Sarge and Murphy. Let’s face it, they are unique characters and Mr. Deckard has painted very clear pictures of how they act and sound. Well, Mr. Russo did not disappoint. He brought these guys to life giving them distinct voices and mannerisms yet making it seem effortless. It is easy to see why he is such a popular narrator. I really hope he continues with book 2 of this series.

Any additional comments?

I cannot believe I read this book almost two years ago. Due to the fact that I read a lot of books, write tons of reviews for myself, as well as drafting others for the blog, it takes a talented author to write a story and characters that stand out above that crowd. Mr. Deckard is one of those authors who does it every single time. I have never forgotten any of the details about Sarge and Murphy’s story. In fact, as soon as this audio started rolling, every one of those details and scenes came flooding back. I remembered being on that planet when Murph was patching Sarge up, and was back in that room with them when they took things to another level. Every colorful detail was vivid once again, right down to the kaleidoscope of Murphy’s vision. I can practically feel the oppressive heat of their surroundings, the dust and blood that they’ve practically become accustomed to. This is one short story that packs a heck of a punch, and I was excited to relive it again on audio.

An erotic SF mil-thrill that really delivers

What made the experience of listening to Sarge the most enjoyable?

The clarity of delivery, the pacing and cadence, brought to life the dehumanizing horrors of war in a SF setting that's rendered with extraordinary economy and impact. The narrator's distinct voices captured the essence of each character. Their erotic encounters served the story and peeled away the layers that revealed what made each man tick. The narrator captured and held my attention from the get-go.

What did you like best about this story?

The author does not hold back on the horrific realities of war and its consequences to those functioning as cannon fodder in service to agendas whose subtext can only be guessed at. This is raw, gritty and powerful stuff. And like the characters, all you want is for their part in the insanity of war to end, and when it does, abruptly, it will leave you gasping for air.

This is short story writing at its finest: parsimonious yet packed with incredible detail, a fine balance of character and action-driven plot, and off-the-charts sensuality amidst the chaos and senselessness of conflict.

Which character – as performed by Nick J. Russo – was your favorite?

Sarge, hands down. The gruff, raspy voice was exactly how I imagined the character sounding after having read the book. Enhancing that was how the narrator captured the subtle progression from Sarge as controlling taskmaster to a man coming to terms with his unexpected emotional connections to Murphy.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

When it comes to war, sometimes the best man to have at your back is the one on his knees...

Any additional comments?

Sarge compels the reader/listener to get down and dirty in the trenches with the characters, to get so invested in them—in their quirks, the masks they wear—that you simply cannot look away or set the book down. Sarge is a masterclass in erotic writing, in scene setting and execution. It really will take your breath away.

Loved it!!

A lot of feelz for such a short book. Nick Russo does an outstanding job narrating as usual. I will definitely look for the sequel to see what happens with these two.

Please spank me harder Sir!

It’s short but it IS glorious! So Sarge and Murphy are stuck on a horrible alien planet where the war is never stopping. And at the very unexpected moment, they both found out that they are the missing pieces of each other’s puzzle. It’s fast-paced, thrilling, erotic yet tender and beautiful. It was a lovely relationship between a Dom and Sub and I couldn’t get enough. And Nick J. Russo made it that much more enjoyable to the story. Beautiful narration and top-notch performance. I’m in love. I’m so freaking glad the second audio is already out because I’d die with blue balls if I have to wait. Really really loved it.
