Publisher's summary

An erotic mystery from USA Today best-selling author Ella James...

Elizabeth DeVille doesn't belong at a party like this - one where the gowns cost more than her Camry and cigars run higher than her grad school utility bills. Dragged out of seclusion by her best friend, Suri, Elizabeth is merely playing dress-up, rubbing elbows with a crowd that banished her troubled family years ago. Hunter West is tired. Tired of parties, tired of pretending, and tired of trying to right a wrong that haunts him every day. Bourbon heir and professional poker player by day, by night Hunter is gambling with his life in a high-stakes game of crime and blackmail. When Elizabeth stumbles into Hunter's den of vices, she's a light in the darkness, a flame in the void. And, just like everything he touches, Hunter mars her in a record time. To rectify the damage done, Elizabeth needs money she doesn't have, and she's come up with a foolproof way to get it. Follow Elizabeth - code-named Scarlett - to the lush Nevada brothel where she'll auction her virginity and risk the only thing that's not for sale: her heart. The highest bidder is a familiar face, with wicked hands and the devil's mouth. And a secret so dark that it could cost her life.

Potential to be good but failed!

It was very difficult to finish listening. I'm not sure how the characters even fell in love. It just felt like it was missing and moving all over the place making it difficult to enjoy the storyline.

Twists and Turns

Hunter is a poker player playboy who hangs at his friend brothel. His family past is complicated. His neighbor Elizabeth has a crush on him and after attending a party at his house, she finds herself in the middle of Hunter's mess as well as her friend Cross' family secrets. It appears that Hunter and Cross have fathers who dabbled in prostitutes and their riches and reputation could be tarnished. An accident, a coma, a murder, disappearances, blackmail, kidnapping, an auction, and a v-card … lots packed in this one.

THE POSSIBILITIES WERE ENDLESS

Any additional comments?

As I finished the book, I was left with the thought that this book had the potential to be extraordinary, but instead it was just....normal. The first 4 hours or 9 chapters kind of dragged and there was actually very little interaction between the two main characters which was a bit annoying. Perhaps this is because the author was setting the stage for a series. I think the biggest problem was that the characters kept talking about their chemistry but I didn't really "feel" the chemistry. The author meant there to be a lot of sexual tension between the characters, but I didn't really get a solid feeling for this and my stomach never clenched with angst or suspense or hope or anything like in other books similar to this one. I think the book had amazing potential, but it just didn't follow through all that well. The narration was a bit odd also. I'm not quite sure how because both narrators were good -- I just didn't feel any emotion from them.

Scarlett

Selling Scarlett is a wonderful story masterfully spun with twists that are surprising and angst that pushes your patience to the limit. I love that Ella keeps you on the edge of your seat, but I did find myself getting a little exasperated from time to time waiting for Libby and Hunter to just get together. I loved the story, but there was a little too much angst. Sometimes that factor leaves the actual point of action a little anticlimactic. Just saying. In any case, the performance readers were outstanding. That man’s voice is sexy and her story telling skills are fantastic! Great job to all. Kudos!

Was ok

Not a favorite and kind of boring at times with to much detail summary. Also corny at times and I found myself fast forwarding. The spark between Liz and Hunter should have felt more intense but was just blah! Don't waste your credit!

DNF: Male Narration is HORRIBLE!

I couldn’t make it very far into the story because the male narration was so annoying. The story tended to bounce around a bit too much, too. Between the poor narration, which made it difficult to focus, and the abrupt ions to the story line, I just gave up on this one. The female narrator was pleasant, but not enough to keep me going. Perhaps I’ll read the book instead.
