Publisher's summary
Thanks to an elderly spinster sleuth and her ingenious cat, Christopher Holmes has enjoyed a celebrated career as a bestselling mystery writer. Until now. Sales are down and his new editor is allergic to geriatric gumshoes. On the advice of his agent, he reinvents his fortyish, frumpy, recently dumped self into the sleek, sexy image of a literary lion, and heads for a Northern California writers conference to try and resurrect his career. A career nearly as dead as the body he stumbles over in the woods. In a weirdly déjà vu replay of one of his own novels, he finds himself stranded in an isolated lodge full of frightened women?and not a lawman in sight. Except for J.X. Moriarity, former cop and bestselling novelist. The man with whom he shared a one-night stand - okay, maybe three - long ago. The man who wants to arrest him for murder. A ruthless, stalking killer, or a hot, handsome ex-lover. Which poses the greater danger? It's elementary, my dear Holmes!

But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e., murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. A story I can't help but to read again and again!
If the summary is good enough for me (and it is) there's no need for me to reiterate. I know I'll get disagreeing scoffs and head movements, but the Holmes and Moriarity series is probably my favorite out of everything I've read. Sure, I've read every flavor novel, especially mysteries (my favorite genre), but I've never read/listened to another as many times as I've listened to this series (even the well known Adrien English series I could only bring myself to read once for some reason). I've actually lost count as to the number of times I've picked up any format of this series to read, and yes I have the paperback, kindle and audible versions. Besides having a personality so similar to Christopher Holmes it's almost like an untrained eye comparing a yoshino and akebono blossom, the story itself drew me in and didn't let go.
Having read the kindle version first and then listened to the audio I can say that Kevin R. Free did an amazing job and made a great book even better.
People may say not to wish your life away, and I would normally agree, except there's a release date for the next installment of Holmes and Moriarity (December 15, 2017 at present). Now I can't help but to hope myself into dotage just that much faster.

Love it - better as an audo book
I started to try to read this series in print format and gave up pretty quickly. I just couldn't find the tone of Kit in my head. I read him as a pretty unpleasant character. I didn't get any of the humor and ironic angst that comes across in the narration. As soon as I started listening to Kevin R. Free's voice for the books I suddenly "got" Kit and it was all good.
Love this book and the series. Love the dark humor and the difficult relationship between the mc's. Have listened to this and the other books in the series that are available through audible a couple of times.

a lot of gay sex
Any additional comments?
Some readers will want to know that in advance that gay sex is a rather large part of this book. Main character behaves fairly stupidly on a regular basis, but is also rather endearing--would have been more believable as an adolescent than as a middle-aged man.

I’m a fan of this authors and have had this series in audiobook for a while. I think I wasn’t in the right frame of mind the first time I listened. The narrator was new to me. Im hoping to enjoy the second book more than the first.

Great Murder/Mystery...
Would you consider the audio edition of Somebody Killed His Editor to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version, but I did read several reviews from those that did. Many didn't like the main character at first. I liked him a lot and I don't know if it was because I was hearing a voice for him so I was getting his humor, his sadness, his... The narrator did a fantastic job. Sometimes it's harder to pick that up in print.
Who was your favorite character and why?
My favorite character was definitely Christopher. He had and attitude that I could relate to. Never too easy on himself, maybe a bit of a smartass. I think being close to the same age, it made it a litte easier to relate.
Which scene was your favorite?
I liked the entire book, but the opening of the book had me. It had me laughing at Christopher and his near demise on the bridge, to finding a dead body, to realizing he was stuck with someone he'd had a serious three-night stand with years before. How many more things could happen to him?
If you could rename Somebody Killed His Editor, what would you call it?
I'm no good at titles, so I'll leave that up to the professionals.
Any additional comments?
Great read, I have found a new author to enjoy. The narrator also did a wonderful job, I could listen to his voice all day. There was a definite voice for each character. It was very easy to understand and I think the emotion was very well done. Very easy to feel what the character was feeling.

DNF - just ordinary, skipped sex scenes
The book brings in some author's concerns and insight into the marketing behind books. That was interesting. The rest of the story is ordinary stuff and I fast-forwarded through the two sex scenes so far. From the sample of the beginning of the book I thought this might be funny, with a dry humor, but that didn't continue. I found this story because I really enjoyed the narrator's work in the Murderbot series, but this must have been before the narrator had honed his speaking voices and delivery. Some of the women's voices were the same as in Murderbot, the haughty snooty ones. Did Not Finish - the dry humor/witty observations didn't last and then it was just an ordinary story and the sex scenes were annoying interruptions.

fantastic
If you're debating on starting this book series, I'd say do it. the beginning of the story is a little slow, like most good stories start. by the 5th chapter, you'll be hooked. this author takes so many twists and turns, and is so in depth with his writing. the narrator though, I honestly forgot I was listening to a book with the motion picture film my brain was making up along with his voice. overall, if you're wondering if it's worth it, it is.

even better in audio!
Any additional comments?
Series/Standalone: book 1
Genre/sub-genre: mystery/romance
Book Format: audio
HEA/HFN: yes
Relatable characters: yes
Abuse/Rape: no
Violence: not really
Ratio of sex/plot: equal/more plot
Well written/editor needed: well written
Would I re-read?: Yes
Personal thoughts: I read the print book years ago and liked it well enough, but for some reason, I enjoyed this even more in audio. The narrator is perfect for the MC and all the other characters.

I'm loving this new series
Josh my favorite author by far. And I mean it, I don't know any other author I get excited about. Mainly because I love mysteries, also Josh's books are never overflowing with sex scenes.
This a murder mystery but with a lighter touch. Humorous situations with out writer MC, he has his insecurities and hangups. I loved the other characters, all colorful and some weird; which is always a plus.
Narrator was amazing. Suited the vibe of the book.

Somebody Killed His Editor
What did you love best about Somebody Killed His Editor?
I love comic mysteries. This narrator was really able to bring out the comic elements and still make the characters real.
What did you like best about this story?
I really enjoy series. I liked the fact that this was the start of a comic mystery series.
Which scene was your favorite?
The beginning of the book when the MC when fighting for his life on the bridge. It was funny and scary at the same time.
If you could rename Somebody Killed His Editor, what would you call it?
How Kit and JX restarted
Any additional comments?
I always like anything Josh Lanyon does, but this narrator really brought out the best in this book and made me laugh throughout the whole thing which I did not do when I read it. I smiled a lot but did not laugh out loud like I did with this narrator.
