Publisher's summary

Notorious Nora Sutherlin is famous for her delicious works of erotica, each one more popular with readers than the last. But her latest manuscript is different - more serious, more personal - and she's sure it'll be her breakout book…if it ever sees the light of day.

Zachary Easton holds Nora's fate in his well-manicured hands. The demanding British editor agrees to handle the book on one condition: He wants complete control. Nora must rewrite the entire novel to his exacting standards - in six weeks - or it's no deal.

Nora's grueling writing sessions with Zach are draining…and shockingly arousing. And a dangerous former lover has her wondering which is more torturous - staying away from him…or returning to his bed?

Nora thought she knew everything about being pushed to your limits. But in a world where passion is pain, nothing is ever that simple.

Strong material

This was a very real book. I mean I can't say for sure these things actually happen but the writing transports you to a world where you BELIEVE they could be.

STOP!!! READ this book - don't listen to it!

I found this book to be wonderfully compelling, but the narration significantly detracted from it. Apologies to Mr. James, but his accents were very poor, inconsistent, and distracting. Worst of all, he would sometimes forget to switch voices making it sound as though one person was speaking when it was actually someone else. This happened over and over. In addition, his choice of voice for Soren made him sound about 75 years old instead of the 45 year old he is.

I wish very much I could go back in time and READ this book instead of listening to it.

As for the story itself, it was captivating. Do yourself a favor and don't read too many reviews, that's another mistake I made. Even when people were trying to avoid spoilers, their hints gave too much away.

Lately I've been reading and/or listening to a lot of BDSM "one-handed" books (as Zach's assistant so amusingly puts it!) but this is NOT that. This is an exploration of sexuality and love and the complexities of both. I highly recommend it.

Love this whole series of series; read The White Years Series first.

I love this author and wish she had more books. These books are well written and thought out (which is atypical in this genre). I wish this collection got more attention, but BDSM is STILL so hush-hush…which is ridiculous, as this series goes far beyond that niche topic and into a greater evolution of human emotion and relationships than found in many other novels.

As written in the review title, I recommend reading “The White Years” before “The Red Years”. This is solely because “The White Years” covers the foundation for the whole collection, which is the relationship between Nora and Søren, along with how the tangential relationships tie into what forms the cadre around which all of these books are constructed.

What vexes me most about this audiobook is the choice of narrator and his choices for voices for most of the characters. An example of this is how he portrays Nora, the protagonist throughout the entire collection. Nora is 33 during this novel; yet, the narrator elected to make her sound like a 75 year old who is writing her memoirs, and not an incredibly intelligent, captivating, and sexy young woman who is described as having a deep sensual voice, entering a serious stage in her endeavor to evolve the craft she has loved since childhood.

This novel is not as capitativing as “The White Years”, mostly as it should come afterwards, is less spicy, and needs to be re-recorded with narrators appropriate for the novel. I will listen to other novels in this collection and buy “The White Years” if they are no longer available in the Plus Catalog…but I will never listen to this audiobook again and believe it should be in the Plus Catalog, due to very poor performance and a failure as a first novel to capture the audience. Perhaps its failures are why it is not free, as people wouldn’t listen on and discover the fabulous books that follow, for this I blame the editor and producer of this recording.

I love “The While Years” and hope “The Red Years” (nice how the author ties in her novel ‘The Red’ as the Nora’s first book)

Not a romance... Very intense adult content!!!

This is a very good audiobook, but it is hardcore erotica, not romance. I don't know why this is in the romance category. This is the book of the year for many readers, but it will be offensive to some. It's disturbing and taboo, but brilliant and thought-provoking.

I suggest you look up the book on amazon or goodreads before being disappointed, if it's not content you are comfortable with.

Not for everyone!! Religious undertones, Bdsm, and highly taboo content.

Excellent listen.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I wouldn't classify this in the Romance section, but I'm glad I found it in this category. I think this book is more about learning to love and forgive oneself. You have the two main characters learning to work with each other, and in that process and sexual tension, they learn more about their true selves than "falling in love." It was well written and captivating.

excellent book but narration badly bungled

If you could sum up The Siren in three words, what would they be?

transgressive, heartfelt, well-crafted

Would you be willing to try another one of Aeron James’s performances?

Not if they required him to work with a variety of accents he hasn't mastered.

Any additional comments?

Aeron James's narration really detracted from my experience. When characters with different accents were in conversation, he lost command of them, so the voiced bled together, making it hard to tell which character was speaking. The accents themselves also seemed parodically exaggerated, especially the French accent. James also mispronounced a number of words and in some places misdelivered a line because he didn't understand its meaning.

Most was good.

I wasn't a fan of how it ended. The story didn't seem over yet. The narrating was good.

Intense!

This was deep, moving and intense. The sex was... crazy. This is probably the darkest book I've read in the category and truly, it helped give me a true understanding of what this type of relationship actually entails. Wow! I loved the story and was totally entranced.

Even if I can't relate to the sexual preference/lifestyle, it was very seducing and alluring. I will be reading more by this author!!!

Happy, sad, sexy, funny!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would highly recommend this book. The content was very realistic, the characters were captivating. I was so emotionally involved in this story I don't know whether to be happy or sad for Nora, Wes or Zach. It could have ended many different ways...was this a happy ending? I don't know, I hope to find out in #2 and #3 to see how everyone survives.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved Nora....she is strong, funny and confident on the outside and loving, giving and an emotional mess on the inside. I hope things go better for her in the future.

What does Aeron James bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I loved his narration and sorry to hear he is not narrating the rest of the series. I think he was supposed to be the voice of Zach...if Zach is not in the rest of the series I can see why they changed. There are very few narrators I have not grown to love as the story progresses, so we will see.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Who wins the consolation prize?

Better than expected..

What made the experience of listening to The Siren the most enjoyable?

I enjoy unpredictable stories, and this was that.

Who was your favorite character and why?

At first it was Zach, but Nora easily made the story enjoyable.

What about Aeron James’s performance did you like?

I like how each character was distinguishable. He also managed to bring their personalities out.
