Publisher's summary

Problems in the sexual relationship are one of the top reasons that couples get divorced, both inside and outside of the Church. Many faithful members have sought out counsel and direction from books, bishops, and therapists. Yet a large portion still complains of low levels of sexual satisfaction or dysfunction, which pull at the marital bond and covenant marriage.

Dr. Anthony A. Hughes, LMFT, is a noted sex therapist and devoted member of the LDS church. In What Your Parents Didn't Tell You About Sex, he shares his vast knowledge and clinical experience for LDS couples who seek to improve their sexual satisfaction, strengthen their marital bond, and glorify God through their sexual union. He has put together the best that research, theory, and thousands of hours practicing sex therapy have to offer.

Focusing strictly on what all the other LDS books on sexual intimacy have missed, Dr. Hughes goes into respectful but needed detail concerning sexual practices between husband and wife. He covers the impact of LDS culture on sexuality, underrepresented aspects of the sexual response cycle, psychological and physical differences disconnecting couples, myths and facts, common problems and solutions, and the impact of sexual addiction on marital intimacy.

Focuses too much on women

The book is full of really useful information. But I don't feel like it lays a good groundwork for sexual safety. Most of his treatment and advice is geared towards increasing women's sexual awareness of themselves, and giving women permission to feel pleasure. He doesn't address soon enough that men and sometimes women, may have incorrect ideas or information in their head about what sex should be. Men's understanding of their own sexuality isn't explored. For example if a guy has a p*** problem he may have unrealistic expectations of sex that could be affecting sexual satisfaction. Men can have problematic cultural understandings of sex too that could be creating a problem. But the author seems to like to focus on women's cultural misunderstandings of sex as a means of treating sexual dysfunction in a marriage.

Very informative

This book provided a very open but religious information about sex. From the biology of male and female sex organs, the sexual process, and even how to overcome some problems such as sexual addictions, premature ejaculation, and inability to have an orgasim. It keeps with all the standards of the lds faith. I didn't think it necessary to have a British lady do the talking. An American guy I think would of made more sense.

Not what I expected

This book was poorly written, poor story line, thoroughly disappointed in it. It felt like anti Mormon literature, I didn’t like the negative connotations applied to the LDS faith.
