Alison Rose Jefferson writes history as a tool in the struggle for social justice. She reconstructs the stories of the African American experience which have been left out or marginalized in the telling of American history. A historian and heritage conservation consultant, Jefferson in addition to writing history, works on visual exhibit and other public presentations of American History for contemporary audiences. She was born in Los Angeles. A third generation Californian, her maternal grand parents, Peter P. and Rosa Cobbs migrated to Los Angeles in 1925 from Montgomery, Alabama to make a better life for themselves and their descendants. Her first book outing was writing essays featured in the catalog for the "Intersections of South Central Los Angeles: People and Places in Historic and Contemporary Photographs" (2006) exhibit. She was a co-curator on this exhibit produced by the California African American Museum and the Automobile Club of Southern California.
