Dr Helmut Schuster is a dual Austrian and British citizen based in London, UK, where he lives and works. From an early age, Helmut was passionate about reading. Socialised in Austria where philosophy, psychology and a humanistic education are part of the curriculum, his teachers soon noticed his talent for writing and encouraged him to hone his skills further. However, like many teenagers, he needed to find his own way. Leaving Austria for the USA, his dreams of becoming an Olympic swimmer and businessman were suddenly placed higher on his list of priorities. Following the completion of his economics degree, he began his corporate career in Marketing in the consumer sector. He later went on to pursue a career in the energy sector, fulfilling a variety of roles in numerous locations around the globe. Working alongside the ‘next generation’ was an essential part of his professional life, whether it was through his work with AFS Intercultural Programmes, the Youth Assembly or his projects with young start-up entrepreneurs. Helmut firmly believes in creating a fairer and more just society through social mobility and supporting and empowering the next generation of leaders. Naturally, he acknowledges that every generation faces its own challenges but is also of the belief that the ‘Gen Z’ and ‘Young Millennial’ generations have the right mindset to master the complexities of an ever-changing world. A foundational principle behind the writing of this book, Helmut strongly believes that two brains are always smarter than one and that every great idea needs two parents. Subsequently, he started a writing collaboration with friend and colleague Dr David Oxley, with the wider aim of reinventing business literature, adapting it within the context of today’s world and increasing its accessibility for the next generation. In 2023, they published their first book, A Career Carol - the first book in the Shey Sinope Saga - which follows the young protagonist through his life’s evolution and career decisions. Helmut describes his work with David as a healthy combination of inspirational and challenging, with his writing partner’s impatience and perfectionism providing the occasional moment of comic relief. One interesting fact about the author is that, in addition to his failed attempt at swimming glory, he has long held a passion for creating the perfect T-shirt, experimenting using different varieties of Peruvian Pima Cotton over the years.
