I was born and raised in Wheaton, Illinois. My father was an English professor at Wheaton College and my mother was an elementary school librarian. I graduated from Wheaton with a B.A. in English in 1971. After about a decade of various jobs and adventures, I settled in Southwest Virginia, raised a family with my wife, Ann Shawhan, earned an MA at Virginia Tech, and began teaching in the English Department. By this time, I was both writing and sculpting, and it was from doing a portrait sculpture of Thomas Jefferson and then one of his slave, Isaac, that I was inspired to write my historical novel, “A Partial Sun,” which is the first book in a trilogy, The Tinsmith’s Apprentice. The second book, “That Dazzling Sun,” was published in August of 2020. I am currently writing the third book, “A Slow Eclipse.”
