Dennis E. Taylor is a former computer programmer turned author of the wildly popular Bobiverse series, so it's no surprise that for his own listening, he turns to sci-fi adventures and nonfiction with plenty of smart scientific ideas within. As his newest Bobiverse adventure Heaven's River, performed by the inimitable Ray Porter, shot up The New York Times audio best-seller list, we checked in with Taylor on what he's been streaming of late. Here's what he had to say.
''The story of the evolution of humanity has always fascinated me. Evolution in general is interesting, but with humanity you have the added detail of an evolved trait that has happened literally only once on Earth: intelligence.''
''I admit I’m a sucker for these types of ‘deep time’ analyses. Throw in some genetics and I’m all in.''
''A different take on sci-fi/fantasy, almost like the old radio soaps in its episodic nature. Refreshingly different.''
''Most ideas in fiction have been done again and again, so it’s rare and gratifying when you discover something that feels truly original. ‘The Dispatcher’ takes one single premise and extends it into a completely plausible and definitely weird world.''
''This is the guy who does the XKCD comics, and his sense of humor carries through the entire book. I found myself chuckling in every chapter, while still learning stuff. Exactly the opposite of a dry, boring recitation of factoids.''
