Resumen del Editor

He had his chance. He blew it, and I’m out of here.

Flora

I’m at the bottom of the pack. I’m female, I have no family left, and everywhere a shifter is supposed to be hard, I’m soft and round. There’s one bright spot in my days—Alec Cameron. He’s hard in every way—so distant that he’s ice cold—but once in a while, he gives me a nod, and we sneak off to the woods. He’s not cold, then. Not at all.

I used to dream that fate would make it official, but after so many years, I’ve given up hope. Then, at a pack run, heat strikes. Alec Cameron is my mate. In front of everyone, he turns his back on me.

I didn’t know how cold he could be, but I do now, and I’ve got a choice to make. Do I hang around and deal with this messed-up pack like I always do? Or do I take my new wolf, break free, and forge a new path of our own?

Alec

This pack is falling apart. Literally. I spend my days patching together buildings that are inches from sliding down the mountain. In my free time, I have to compete with the other two males vying for Salt Mountain alpha, the world’s worst job.

I’m constantly holding everything together, and until the night of the last full moon run, there was at least one bright spot in my days.

Then Flora Ritchie goes into heat at the worst possible time and place, and in all the chaos and revelations, I lose my grip. And my temper.

In the blink of an eye, my mate is gone.

I know how to fix things, not feelings, but if I don’t figure it out quickly, I’m going to lose it all.

His Curvy Rejected Mate is the fourth novel in the Five Packs series, but it can be listened to as a stand-alone story. No cheating. HEA guaranteed. Intended for adult listeners only.

The only classic love story in the series

This author writes exceptionally well. I never admire the quality of the writing when I read romance books. Some authors do have a deep understanding of human nature and emotional life which is wonderful, but their prose is always very utilitarian. This author is excellent at both. There are thick layers of emotional depth with nuance in the way it’s expressed. Along with smart/witty stuff like:

“…and then consider the quilt. It reeks of sex. It’s got crusty patches that make my face burn to think about, and Alex is staking it out like daVinci’s Vitruvian Man except with no circle drawn around him, and a much bigger harder dick.”

“Back in school Bevin was a joker, and a toker, but he was a noticer too. He was the kind of chaos agent that bends the arc of the universe toward good in the dumbest ways”

“The chairs that can be stacked, are piled in Seussical leaning towers of Pisa, I hold my breath when I scurry past them.”

And a million more tiny treats.

On a romantic level, I got those squishy feelings I get when a relationship is chefs kiss. Like I wanted to stop reading immediately and hide the couple in my brain in stasis. Not because they were perfect unguarded people, but because they were imperfectly meandering toward utter perfection, and on that path TOGETHER. It was exactly the way all books in this genre should be. I was kinda terrified that Cate C Wells would ruin it, but instead, the main relationship moved steadily upward - from bad to good to bliss.

The intro of this book was ROUGH. The rejection was humiliating. Alec (H) was publicly cruel and hateful. He used very intimate insults. I mean, Killian (book 1) still holds the title of Alpha dumbass, but this guy wasn't far behind. Setup: The Flora (h) has been in love with Alec and giving him regular blowjobs on the downlow for years (since highschool). He nods her way, they go somewhere private, she gets on her knees. Bing, bang, boom. He gives her ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in return. No public acknowledgement, no conversation, no pleasure, no kisses, no reciprocation whatsoever, he even briefly dates another.

Flora was yell-out-loud levels of pathetic. But it was explained entirely by her crushingly low self esteem. Because of her weight Flora is a shifter anomaly. And she has been relentlessly attacked her entire life. It isn't just a nuisance, for her it has become a full scale disability. The self loathing and feelings of physical discomfort, control her mind the way an eating disorder does. It actually started to make horrific sense that she would get pleasure from those one-sided rendezvous with Alec. After all they gave her: human contact, someone's undivided attention, praise, secondhand gratification, and the ability to bask vicariously in Alec's (universally accepted) beauty. But it was still sickening. Then in a seriously badass move, when her mate rejects her, Flora decides 'to hell with everyone' and leaves pack, destination: Cadoc's (book 2) Old Den. Yes, she's still a weak person doing a bold thing, but her paradigm has been shifted and it saves her from being a doormat. In a kinda surprising move Alec immediately chases, uprooting his whole life. And we slowly find out (for the rest of the book) exactly how obsessed he is/has always been with Flora - physically, emotionally, spiritually.

This was the only classic love story in the series. All of the other books have used hierarchical barriers, socioeconomic divides, and threats of violence, as barriers to love. In other words: external conflicts. The major conflict here was completely internal for both MCs. Both character arcs were about going from one's own worst enemy to one's own saviour.

Great story, great performance

I'm a fan of 'rejected mates' and so far I have enjoyed 2 of Cate C. Wells titles featuring this. Faith Clark and Christopher Rourke were great, I only wish Rourke had more time in narrating - I tend to prefer male performers. I liked that Flora and her thoughts regarding her weight were easily relatable and realistic and that although her human side was at times cowed, her wolf was one a badassed biotch!

4 stars - worthy of a repeat listen

Wolf shifter, rejected mate!

This is the fourth book in the Five Packs series and I’ve been loving this wolf shifter, rejected mate series from Cate C Wells. This one is probably my next fav in the series after book 1.

In here we follow Flora and Alec. They’ve actually been sorta secretly hooking up for years and Flora definitely feels used and kept as a secret. But she’d also love for him to be her mate. She’s also curvy and her body and shape seems to be seen as less-than in their pack and community so she gets a lot of hate and is made fun of from the rest of the pack. She does end up going into her first heat when her and Alec realize they are actually mates and they end up taking off together.

This one just has some surprisingly sweet moments that were sprinkled into the story. I liked seeing Flora find her strength and confidence along the way. This one definitely deals with a lot of angsty moments, the whole series kinda has these heartbreaking moments throughout. But it does definitely make the HEA that much more satisfying at the end.

Demeaning pack members

Flora heard all day long, every day that she is overweight and not worthy a praise. Only her strength got her moving and with her maté regaining her love for life.

Fun & Humorous With A Ton Of Smut

Thoughts: 💡
I am obsessed. I am in love. I am totally hungover from this book. I downloaded it 12 hours ago and just devoured it. There were actual tears and audible laughs because of this story. It’s a rough one, but it felt honest and real and respectful which is pretty fabulous because this book is an urban fantasy.

As someone that struggles with their weight and has to deal with fat phobia and the extreme hate my obesity brings out in other people I have mixed feelings with how it is handled in literature and media. Yet, I adore the way that Cate wrote about it. I identified with Flora and I loved watching Flora develop her identity outside of her body image, while also addressing her self-image. This story wasn’t written with a magic cure all, the heroine had to learn to accept herself first. I loved the line Cate wrote, “I didn’t rescue you, and you had to rescue yourself, but I’m so 🤬 proud that you did.”

As for Alex, I won’t lie, I hated that 🤬 for the first part of this book. I literally highlighted sections in my kindle and wrote notes like I could somehow tell his character how stupid he was. (FYI, I haven’t written a note in my kindle before Alex’s character just made me that mad.) Honestly; it’s part of why I love Cate’s stories so much. When she writes characters that mess up, she doesn’t excuse them. She’s honest with their mistakes, she makes them stew in that awful feeling you get when you realize you’re wrong and what you did hurt people. She writes about actual issues, where the character truly did wrong someone, it’s not a misunderstanding it was a real 🤬 up. Then gives the character an honest catalyst to force change, and then she drives it forward showing the path to change in real steps. So by the end of the book, I loved Alex as well.

As a couple both characters had to learn to see each other clearly. This wasn’t a story where all of the fault was cast to one side of the relationship. Cate showed how the struggles both MCs faced clouded their ability to see the other person’s needs. Cate didn’t pose those struggles as an excuse either, merely an explanation of fault and then the characters addressed it.
As for the grammar, mechanics, world building, character development, and continuity between stories, I would call it perfection. I only found one very small minor typo in the whole story.

Sound:
The female narrator did a great job and the male narrator wasn’t bad, he just made a stylistic choice I wasn’t enamored with. Both narrators were clear and easy to understand and used humorous accents at points so it was very easy and enjoyable to follow along. The over all audio quality was clear, clean, and easy to listen to. I highly recommend this if you enjoy smutty audiobooks.

Bits I Loved:
⚜️ FMC learning Self-Love and Self-Acceptance.
⚜️ An honest look at how bullying can affect a person’s thoughts.
⚜️ Drama and scenarios that evoke audible laughter or real tears.
⚜️ Real Relationship Development

Important Note:✨
This is book 4 in The Five Packs series.
I. Need. More. I’m just taking a moment here to write a plea for more stories in this series. I would love for this to become the next IPB and for Cate to write a hundred more books for The Five Packs series.
