I was nearly 19 when I got accepted to a prestigious art college in New York City. Up to that point, I had never even left my home state in the Midwest. I had led a sheltered and repressed life in many ways — nobody knew that I was a woman who was into other women, not men. I kept it a closely guarded secret because of how strict my home life was, and so I never dated or hooked up with a woman.
