Historia
Steven Rinella (The MeatEater Podcast) brings to life the legendary wilderness exploits of men such as Jim Bridger, Jedidiah Smith, and Hugh Glass, who headed out to the Rocky Mountains to trap beavers in the decades following the Louisiana Purchase. Living off the land and dodging grizzly bears, these colorful characters carved out an existence defined by their relationships with Native people, their capacity to endure the most trying conditions, and their intimate knowledge of the western landscape.

Another segment of wilderness history brought to life
Revisado: 02-20-25
If you are intrigued by the reality of mountain men this book is a must read. They are brought to life with descriptive stories of adventure and misfortune. The subject subculture in this brief period in American history is a worthy study as well entertaining.
Steve Rinella does his usual brilliant narration. No survey of settling the west is complete without mention of the trials and tribulations of mountain men. For their existence, we, as a developed society, are better for it.

Historia
This biography by Edmund Morris, the Pulitzer Prize - and National Book Award - winning author of The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt and Theodore Rex, marks the completion of a trilogy sure to stand as definitive. Of all our great presidents, Theodore Roosevelt is the only one whose greatness increased out of office. What other president has written 40 books, hunted lions, founded a third political party, survived an assassin’s bullet, and explored an unknown river longer than the Rhine?

A brilliant man, forward thinker, flawed yet rightfully celebrated
Revisado: 01-26-24
This book wonderfully completes the three volumes on TR by Edmund Morris.
Our country was shaped by his influence and his great intentions of righteousness in society, government, and the environment. The man was a great patriot and today’s leaders will be stronger if they study the manner and execution of TR living his life and directing all the affairs he was charged with or otherwise had a say in.
The narration was superb leaving me feeling like I was listening to TR real-time.
The book is educational, inspiring, reflective, and at times amusing. I now look forward to visiting Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay and walking in TR’s steps.

Historia
Sue Tidwell lived in awe of Africa’s extraordinary wildlife. After years spent appreciating the animals in her imagination, the tenderhearted American hated the idea of joining her husband on a big game hunting safari. And getting attacked by blood-sucking tsetse flies the moment she stepped off the plane gave no hint of the mind-blowing change of perspective in her future. With her initial animosity turning into curiosity as they breathlessly tracked dangerous beasts, Sue formed a surprising bond with their young female government-assigned game scout.

An African “Boots on the Ground” Story: Truth and Facts Dispel Arrogance and Ignorance
Revisado: 08-22-23
Here is Africa, plain and simple, or maybe complicated in ways you didn’t imagine. More than likely, it is the latter.
Living the Safari experience results in more rational thought and action (e.g., conservation efforts) than fabricated emotions driven by third party hearsay and false, unfounded representations could impart, ever the more notable in the telling of the hunt. Sue Tidwell effectively placed us by her side as she embraces the magnificent landscape and lives alongside the remarkable creatures of the savanna (the sound of the African night is a brilliant addition to this book). Her straight-forward delivery of adventure is filled with her wonder, fears, sentimentality, and love of the African landscape, the fauna, and it’s people. Her undeniable passion for Africa emerges as it “gets in your blood”, which is commonly spoken of amongst those fortunate enough to leave footsteps in this great land. Sue’s descriptions of the various animals, how they live, and what endangers them will delight naturalists and stir the soul of conservationists.
This book entertains, broadens the mind, overcomes bias if you let it, and focuses our view of a misunderstood and all too real world that is at once our history and presents a future that is our challenge.

Historia
Outdoor writer Mike Arnold takes us on an impressionistic journey through Coutada 11, a once again magnificent natural area in Mozambique's Zambeze Delta. Mike leads us from its poached-out days as a source of bush meat for starving villagers and civil war military troops to the arrival in the early '90s of hunting outfitter Mark Haldane and his partners, on their often perilous, sometimes hilarious, travails to take the defiled and uninhabitable place and make it whole again.

A successful conservation initiative of magnitude
Revisado: 12-27-22
This is a complete conservation story bringing together what many of us have heard or read in pieces from multiple sources over the years. The value of wildlife to international hunters and local people, the collaboration of a small team of dedicated, insightful individuals, visionary philanthropists providing a means of funding, the necessary and constructive behavior modifications of affected people, and wise and willing government officials resulting in a wonderfully told story of rebirth, restoration, and rejuvenation.
Anyone with a passion for conservation, the hunt, proper balancing of the ecosystem, and reversing the "scars upon the land" from past generations will get enjoyment and find enlightenment from this book.

Historia
In the last three decades of the 19th century, an American buffalo herd once numbering 30 million animals was reduced to 23. It was the era of Manifest Destiny, a gilded age that viewed the West as nothing more than a treasure chest of resources to be dug up or shot down. Supporting hide hunters was the US Army, which considered the eradication of the buffalo essential to victory in its ongoing war on Native Americans.

Brilliantly written and superbly narrated.
Revisado: 02-01-22
As a Hemingway fan, I find this story right near the top of his best writing. The prose and narration placed me in time and space as if I were part of the cast. Delight in the color, glory, and danger that the running of the bulls delivers. Embrace the characters for their journey, personal challenges, triumphs and failures. The period is post-Great War, but now years past consider how ensuing generations have rebounded from great events. Masterful Hemingway.
Deservedly so, the narration will keep your attention and entertain you.

A deep, personal, and tasteful telling of the hunt
Revisado: 01-20-22
For hunters and nonhunters, the stories of the hunt will draw you in to experience the chase. The author offers that time afield is a sensory feast and the pursuit is described in a fashion that is neither revolting nor bloodlust. The harvesting of an animal is anti-climatic yet the primary purpose, one of accomplishment that carries necessity, pride, and respect of all things natural and primal.

Historia
The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.

An marvelous example of the writing craft. This story pulls you in quickly as you find yourself in each scene; the confines of life in the shack, the determination of the fisherman, the limitations of boat and tackle, the boundless waters, and the power of the beasts of the sea. Triumph and defeat laid raw on man by the forces of nature. How will you define victory when you conquer your nemesis?

Upland hunts are delightfully simply complex
Revisado: 05-30-21
Anyone who has appreciated the autumn woods, the work of a sporting dog, and the abrupt and starling flush of upland birds will find themselves in this collection of stories. Maybe too sentiment for some, but this is how it was, somewhere perhaps how it still is, and just maybe there are places where the peace and majesty of a walk in the hills relives these stories again and again.
