Historia
Lily Maynard is proud, chilly, difficult, and has become a famous writer at age seventy-two. Now, stricken with Parkinson's disease and staying with her architect son Alan, Lily must cope with her fading powers as well as with disturbing memories of the events that estranged her from her children and ended her marriage. For Alan, her visit raises old questions about his relationship with her, about the choices he has made in his own life, and about the nature of love, disappointment, and grief.

Not my favorite Sue Miller novel
Revisado: 01-13-25
I am a huge fan of Sue Miller and have read many of her novels, but this one left me disappointed. Her writing is excellent as usual, and her insight into her characters' heart, soul and inner conflicts is masterful, Overall, I felt this book lacked drama. There was not much build-up to the story, nor real climax or denouement. It felt more like an observation of ordinary life. The narrator did an excellent job with the characters' dialogue, but when she just narrated without dialogue, her voice was not pleasant to my ear. I don't regret reading it but would not recommend it to someone who was reading Sue Miller for the first time as they may not want to try another book.

Historia
Michael is coming undone. Adrift after his wife's departure, he has begun taking himself on long, solitary walks across the English countryside. Becoming ever more reclusive, he’ll do anything to avoid his empty house. Marnie, on the other hand, is stuck. Hiding alone in her London flat, she avoids old friends and any reminders of her rotten, selfish ex-husband. Curled up with a good book, she’s battling the long afternoons of a life that feels like it’s passing her by.

Romantic without being corny
Revisado: 01-08-25
I enjoyed this poignant story from beginning to end and found myself rooting for Marnie and Michael to succeed. Their internal dialogue was so relatable and their banter funny and charming. It was a joy to watch their characters' evolution from flawed and fearful to opening up their hearts enough to let each other in.. The narrators were perfect and gave life to the characters. I loved I'll be looking for other books by David Nichols

Historia
How did America end up with a leader who acts so crudely and despotically, and counter to our democratic principles? Why do his followers stick with him, even when he acts against their interests? John Dean, a man with a history of standing up to autocratic presidents, joins with Bob Altemeyer, a psychology professor with a unique area of expertise: authoritarianism. Together, using psychological diagnostic tools, as well as exclusive research and analysis from the Monmouth University Polling Institute, the authors provide us with an eye-opening understanding of the Trump phenomenon.

Scary stuff
Revisado: 09-22-24
There is a lot of valuable information in the book that expands on Trump's actions over the years and how the Trump followers came to be as they are, but a different narrator with a more neutral tone who simply read the text would have been more enjoyable. I am tired of hearing anything that sounds unnecessarily sensationalistic as the text speaks for itself.

A book for adolescents
Revisado: 08-26-24
I had heard good things about this author with a recent release of her book called The Women, so thought I'd try this one a try as it was on sale and had so many so many gushing reviews. The story is formulaic and repetitive with cardboard characters and is written for an adolescent. The scenes with declaration of "true love" and teenage petting made me cringe. I predicted what would happen early in the book. The narrator's childlike voice for Mia and Lexie added to my torture. Who talks like that? The dialogue was beyond annoying. The story dragged on and on, and as i couldn't return the book purchased it on sale, I skipped to Part 2 to get to end my misery. It was easy to put the pieces together even after skipping through half the book. I read and enjoyed many of these types of books when I was young, but if you are older, I do not recommend it.

Historia
Despite being hailed as one of the best guitarists of his era, George Harrison, particularly in his early decades, battled feelings of inferiority. He was often the butt of jokes from his bandmates owing to his lower-class background and, typically, was allowed to contribute only one or two songs per Beatles album out of the dozens he wrote.

Fresh and original story
Revisado: 07-11-24
Because the author often writes mysteries and thrillers, I was surprised to find myself immersed in a story about two characters that love each other but have lost their way. If you like stories that are character rich, this is it. It unfolds at an even pace although I did speed it up a bit. Helen Duff was the perfect choice to narrate this story. Her diction, accent and melodious tone of voice was so pleasant to listen to, and she did an excellent job differentiating the male and female characters. I will seek other books from her. Jem and Ralph were flawed but I still cared for them and was glad they were not beyond redemption. I found the dynamics of family life to be authentic, and the story took many unexpected turns that kept me intrigued. I loved every minute of it and intend to read more from this author. I highly recommend this book.

Repetitive
Revisado: 06-10-24
I struggled to finish this book. The dialogue was so repetitive that the story could have been told in half the time. This resulted in the plot being unnecessarily stalled and having no tension. I refer to the time on the train with the main character and the situation with the daughter at home. I could have walked away from my phone for five minutes and not missed the thread of the story. The writing was sophomoric, and the characters one-dimensional and uninteresting. I can't recall if this was a deal of the day, but I hope I didn't pay for it. I would not try anything more from this author.

Disappointing
Revisado: 05-03-24
I had just completed The Talented Mr Ripley and was keen to read more by Patricia Highsmith. This novel was available for free for a limited time, so I chose it. It left me disappointed and underwhelmed. A climactic ending might have saved it but it ended with a whimper. Don't expect a page turner with this one. The narration by Simon Vance was flawless.

Want to hang out with Frankie Elkin for a day
Revisado: 03-06-24
This is the second book I've read in this series and it's even better than the first. Lisa Gardner has created such rich believable characters, especially in that of Frankie Elkin. She is flawed, yet so likeable with her quick wit, humor, and generosity of spirit. The story was suspenseful, fast-paced and kept me engrossed the whole way through. Hillary Huber's narration captured the essence of each character and made them easily identifiable. Okay, I'll agree with other reviewers' critiques of the voice she gave Bob but that didn't deter me from thinking she did an amazing job overall. I look forward to the next book in the series and hope it will be with the same narrator.

Historia
In Find Me the Votes, two years of immersive reporting by Isikoff and Klaidman has produced the most authoritative and dramatic account yet of a defeated president’s conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election and how a local Georgia prosecutor—a daughter of the civil rights movement—decided to indict him and his allies for his desperate attempt to hold on to power. From the beginning, Fani Willis saw Donald Trump’s crimes as a voting rights case, and an attempt by the former president to deprive the citizens of Georgia of the franchise, a right for which her forebears had bled.

Detailed and informative
Revisado: 02-08-24
Both terrifying and chilling, this book details what went down in Georgia. The admirable and disciplined Fanni Willis is not squeamish about taking on such a powerful figure who manages a chokehold on the Republican party. Her evolution to becoming prosecutor is also fascinating. The care taken in building an airtight case gives one hope that justice will be served. Even if you are a political junkie, there is much to be learned in this book; as another reviewer wrote, it is also a compelling page-turner that I finished in one day.
