Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Revisado: 09-01-24
What a ride! Awesome sci-fi, great character arc, comedy and action. Andy Weir's knack for dumminng down very heady science and combining that into an entertaining story is an art form in itself. This one didn't disappoint, it's more sci-fi than The Martian is so beware, but I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Yet Another Slowdown for the Series
Revisado: 03-17-23
We seem to be going back and forth between releases of good books and meh books. For most of this book it was meh. The Mavericks section which was a HUGE part of this one was for the most part dull. The potential of the Mavericks spinoff had to start somewhere so I get it, but without Skippy and Joe it's rather dull.

Historia
United Nations Special Operations Command sent an elite expeditionary force of soldiers and pilots out on a simple recon mission, and somehow along the way they sparked an alien civil war. Now the not-at-all-merry band of pirates is in desperate trouble, again. Their stolen alien starship is falling apart, thousands of light years from home. The ancient alien AI they nicknamed Skippy is apparently dead, and even if they can by some miracle revive him, he might never be the same.

Banger of an Entry!
Revisado: 03-10-23
Strongest entry yet since book 1 imo. Of course Alanson isn't the best writer and has many faults but that's not why we're here, we're here for a cheesey, funny space opera and that's what we get more of here. Lots of action in this one. Again, R.C. Bray knocks it out of the park!

The elite crew of the pirate ship UNS Flying Dutchman had a simple mission: determining whether the Thuranin are sending another starship to Earth. Along the way, they became sidetracked by securing a future for the UNEF troops on the planet Paradise. When asked whether Earth was now safe, their ancient alien AI responded "Not so much"...now they have to deal with the consequences.

A Pickup in the Action

After what I consider a slower book 3, book 4 gets back on track with plenty of action. The start is a tad slow but it gets going. Plenty to like in this one

While the crew of the starship Flying Dutchman have been trying to assure that hostile aliens do not have access to Earth, the UN Expeditionary Force has been stranded on the planet they nicknamed "Paradise". The Flying Dutchman is headed back out on another mission, and the UN wants the ship to find out the status of the humans on Paradise. But Colonel Joe Bishop warns that they might not like what they find, and they can't do anything about it without endangering Earth.

A Small Slowdown in the Series
Revisado: 02-26-23
Overall another great entry in the series, however there was what I considered a small period of slowdown. For a while the story would go back and forth between what was going on in Paradise and the Dutchman. The problem is Paradise, there's really no characters there that interest me, I care a small bit about Corn Pone because Bishop cares about him. I guess that's where the lack of character development I now realize 3 books in could be bad. Really only Bishop has decent character development, with sparse bits here and there for the other characters in the Merry Band of Pirates. So when Bishop and Skippy aren't in the spotlight, things get a bit boring like we had here. Still a good entry though.

Historia
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Well...1 Down 14 To Go!
Revisado: 02-18-23
This book pretty much had me hooked within 30 minutes of listening. The writing is witty and smart but the narrator REALLY takes this adventure to a different level. I cautiously looked at other entries in the series and was pleased to see that R.C. Bray narrates every one! I tried this entry because it was free, and honestly when reading the plot and it included the term space hamsters I didn't expect much, but I'm honestly blown away and now plan on buying every single entry. Expect action, adventure, space exploration, and lots of comedy.

Historia
The Grand Hotel is a horror novel by esteemed best-selling author Scott Kenemore ( Zombie, Ohio) that takes the reader on a thrilling ride through an interconnected series of stories narrated by the desk clerk and the residents of the hotel itself. And while it is not known whether or not the desk clerk is actually the devil incarnate, it is strange that so many visitors who come for a tour of the hotel have a way of never leaving.

Interesting Story With Ups and Downs
Revisado: 02-10-23
This was free with a subscription so no complaints there, that being said I would not pay for it nor listen to it again. As others have noted, the narration is the saving grace..
This style of storytelling is not common, I've seen it more in movies than in books. There is a main storyline with main characters, and throughout the book there are a series of non-related tales/mini stories told. These mini stories are the problem with the book as they range from downright boring to only mildly interesting.
***SPOILERS***
The ending could have used some work as well, it was too abrupt and didn't do the main characters justice. Also the Redhead didn't have any interesting story herself, and for someone that's so vital to the storyline to be the next Djinni it doesn't make sense. She's wise beyond her years...ok?!? THAT'S what makes her a once in a few hundred years Djinni? Weak writing saved by a great narrator.

Sorry I'm rambling, what were we talking about?
Revisado: 02-04-23
First of all I overall really enjoyed the book. The way it's presented is a fresh take. While there are plenty of blood and guts, it's presented in a way that's different from your average horror/suspense novel, it's very tolerable. It's a book that'll probably stick with you for a while if not for good as many of the events have happened and we can see happening again, maybe not to this extreme, but Super Dome after Hurricane Katrina anyone?
The performances were my only gripe. Some of them were downright awesome and some were overdone or didn't quite fit the character.

Good Book, Robotic Narration
Revisado: 02-01-23
It's a typical Cussler action novel, sinister villain, dashing hero, etc, etc. Not bashing, I love the genre, but nothing new. Only downside here is the narration. It was very robotic and he didn't have the skills to properly capture the inflections of different characters so sometimes when 2 or more characters are talking it can be confusing who's saying what. He also sounds like a detective in a 50s detective flick.

Sorry, I tried...
Revisado: 01-25-23
I'm a big fan of Dean Koontz, but this story sucked. And the narrator sucked more. I gave it about 2 hours and I never felt drawn into the story. Too many other good books to spend any more time on this I've read many of his books and this one is down there towards the bottom. The narrator didn't help either, just not a good performance. No wonder this was in the free Audible catalog.
