I really don't understand this book!
Revisado: 05-07-24
I go occasionally out of my comfort zone in books. I can't say too much or I would give away the plot. The ending just made no sense to me! Are we supposed to see half the book as her delusions?? And was her marriage all along a sham? Unless it is all a delusion, I don't see people as being that way.

Historia
Ana Montes had spent seventeen years spying for the Cubans. She had been raised in a patriotic Puerto Rican household: Her father, a psychiatrist, was a former colonel in the US Army. Her sister worked as a translator for the FBI and helped break up a ring of Cuban spies in Miami. Her brother was also a loyal FBI agent. Montes impressed her bosses but in secret spent her breaks memorizing top-secret documents before sending them to the Cuban government. Retired FBI agent Peter J. Lapp explains the clues that led their team to catch one of the United States’ most dangerous spies.

Shows why someone would betray their country for a corrupt regime

I liked the personal details of the investigating FBI agent, and the effort to understand the narcissistic spy's personality. She believed what she wanted and disregarded the rest. The thrill of the chase to uncover the spy kept me listening.

Historia
Lee Acker is horrified by the violent killing of his childhood best friend. And he is equally distraught to discover that he stands wrongly accused of the crime. As a whirlwind of media frenzy and a high-profile investigation descend on Lee's ordinarily quiet Georgia town, he boldly flees to Mexico in a hunt for answers. Now, Lee's last hope rests with the local legal community's rising star, Maggie Reynolds.

could have been better
Revisado: 11-11-23
very slow and tedious in the beginning. Action picks up mid book. For such a brilliant lawyer, Maggie stupidly ruins her lover's career. The author hides plot information from the reader to make a splashy ending. That ending doesn't work for me, given the personalities of the characters.

San Francisco, 1947. Bartender Sammy “Two Toes” Tiffin and the rest of the Cookie’s Coffee Irregulars—a ragtag bunch of working mugs last seen in Noir—are on the hustle: they’re trying to open a driving school; shanghai an abusive Swedish stevedore; get Mable, the local madam, and her girls to a Christmas party at the State Hospital without alerting the overzealous head of the S.F.P.D. vice squad.

disappointed
Revisado: 05-21-23
Have liked some of Christopher Moore's books in the past. Just could not get into this one. Maybe it gets better as you go along, I just couldn't waste the time to find out. I didn't particularly care for any of the characters.

Historia
On December 16, 1944, the vanguard of three German armies, totaling half a million men, attacked US forces in the Ardennes region of Belgium and Luxembourg, achieving what had been considered impossible - total surprise. In the most abysmal failure of battlefield intelligence in the history of the US Army, 600,000 American soldiers found themselves facing Hitler's last desperate effort of the war. The brutal confrontation that ensued became known as the Battle of the Bulge, the greatest battle ever fought by the US Army - a triumph of American ingenuity and dedication.

Historia
They each had their reasons for being a soldier. They each had their illusions. Goodrich came from Harvard. Snake got the tattoo - Death Before Dishonor - before he got the uniform. And Hodges was haunted by the ghosts of family heroes. They were three young men from different worlds plunged into a white-hot, murderous realm of jungle warfare as it was fought by one Marine platoon in the An Hoa Basin, 1969. They had no way of knowing what awaited them. Nothing could have prepared them for the madness to come. And in the heat and horror of battle they took on new identities, took on each other, and were each reborn in fields of fire....

Historia
McGee Ridge, earthquake-rattled and clinging to the thousand-foot cliffs of the Northern California coast, is nestled in one of a very few truly wild places left in the Lower 48. It is also home to a band of off-grid outlaws who vanished behind the famed Redwood Curtain in the 1960s and whose time there is swiftly coming to an end.

Mediocre
Revisado: 06-10-22
This is a strange disjointed tale of a half dozen or so people living off the grid in northern coastal California. Told with too many flashbacks. Most were growing marijuana. I stayed with it to the end, but it still didn't make much sense and didn't leave me with any closure of the characters. Waste of time.

Historia
Taylor is the name, John Taylor. My card says I'm a detective, but what I really am is an expert on finding lost things. It's part of the gift I was born with as a child of the Nightside. I left there a long time ago, with my skin and sanity barely intact. Now I make my living in the sunlit streets of London. But business has been slow lately, so when Joanna Barrett showed up at my door, reeking of wealth, asking me to find her runaway teenage daughter, I didn't say no.
