I am unenlightened about botany, to say the least. But I still enjoyed this book very much, even in audiobook format. It's not dry and was written for the layman. The author did a terrific job of narration, too.

Can plants communicate with each other? Do they have some kind of "vision"? Are they intelligent? Although traditional scientists are extremely reluctant to make any definitive statements, lest they become pariahs in their fields, recent research has opened a lot of wormholes about the capabilities of plants. It was fascinating to follow the author's quest to find the latest data from different specialists all over the world.

An excellent overview of the time period presented very well by Professor Hale. He covers a lot of subjects, and the accompanying PDF is essential for following along the audio version.

This first of a series reminded me of many other YA fantasy books, but that didn't keep me from enjoying it. It's well-written and engaging, although several important parts of the story are not explained.

First, I broke my rule (again) about not reading books that included a 17-year-old protagonist. Yes, the plot sounded very familiar: an orphan with a tragic past is chosen to attend, under cover, an elite school where the competition is brutal. But the setting in a sadistic alternate world where the Hierarchy—very like the Roman Empire—is in charge, is fascinating.

The main characters are appealing, although it's very difficult to tell what side anyone is really on. So much deception can be a little tiring, honestly. There is enough action to offset the political machinations, and Vis does his best to find the answer to a mystery for his adopted father. However, that puzzle is not solved, and much of what Vis goes through is too ambiguous.

Added to that, this is a very long book. The audiobook, well narrated by Euan Morton, is over 28 hours. By the time the second book is published, I will have to skim this first one to remember what is happening.

Contains gruesome violence, no foul language, no sex. Themes include deceit, conspiracy, physical and mental slavery, friendship, and loyalty.

More sedate than the St. Mary's stories, but a delight to read about this odd couple who are so good at their professions. There are only a few characters—versus the ensemble in the St. Mary's books—so it's easier to concentrate on them. Taylor is so great with endings, too. I would love to see a follow-up.

Solid historical novel with great narration

This historical novel follows an exiled Greek warrior and his loyal band of brothers as they accept a mercenary assignment from a tyrant in a distant city. The book description is spot on. Kineas is a great character because, unlike so many other "hero" types, he's unsure about his ability to lead and questions his decisions; this is a more realistic and interesting guy.

Lots of battle action and violence, plenty of foul language, no sexual content. Peter Noble does a terrific job of narrating the audiobook (although it doesn't include a glossary like the print book promises).

Excellent accounts of each of the ancient wonders, narrated wonderfully by the author. The author as narrator doesn't always work, but Hughes did a fine job here. Highly recommended for history lovers.

Great characters override the romance

There really isn't much romance in the story, but it's an entertaining historical set in the Regency period, with all the rules of society intact.

The story is definitely character-driven. I thought the MC was going to be the governess, Miss Arbuthnot, but Thomas Wilder is a much more interesting and active character who stole the limelight, in my opinion. Lady Charles was the definition of a wet blanket, and her constant focus on the loss of her first son went overboard quickly.

The third-person point of view worked very well here, but I do think the book is a bit too long.

Charlotte Strevens narrated the audiobook and did a great job, overall, although I didn't care for her governess voice.

This is a collection of five stories from the Holmes on the Range mysteries by Steve Hockensmith. The Amlingmeyer brothers are always ready to step in and help those who need an Old West mystery solved, and Old Red's deducifying skills are put to good use here. Fans will love these stories, and those new to the series will find themselves looking for the full-length books, starting with "Holmes on the Range." Some Old West-appropriate violence, no foul language, no sexual content. The audiobook was narrated excellently by Chuck Galco.

Listen to this book to immerse yourself in Victorian London and better appreciate the works and life of Charles Dickens. Not a biography, but a guide to living in the city during the era, with all the good and bad things that went along with that.

The author cleverly uses Dickens's great powers of observation to explore the history and evolution of city life. The topical chapters were well-organized and included a lot of detail about subjects like cemeteries, weather, immigration, markets, prostitution, food, transportation, entertainment, sewage, and much more.

I do wish I'd had an interactive map, or series of maps, of London so I could follow along better. It would have helped to be more familiar with the neighborhoods and streets discussed.

The audiobook was expertly narrated by Corrie James.
