Historia
If you could go back in time...and witness any event...where would you go? When Dr. Tom Greenbaum faces that question after successfully discovering the secret to time travel, he knows the time, place, and event he will witness: the death and failed resurrection of Jesus Christ. Dr. David Goodman, Tom's colleague and closest friend follows Tom into the past, attempting to avert a time-space catastrophe, but forces beyond their control toss them into a dangerous end game.

Pretty typical Jeremy Robinson
Revisado: 07-16-24
Pretty typical Jeremy Robinson, really. Interesting premise, some interesting action - but the characters themselves are cardboard cutouts that seem to have their dialogue written by a teenager.
It's okay. Nothing egregiously bad about the book. It's just ... okay.

So much of our human body is made up of salt that we'd be dead without it. The fine balance of nature, the trade of salt as a currency of many nations and empires, the theme of a popular Shakespearean play... Salt is best selling author Mark Kurlansky's story of the only rock we eat.

Historia
Destroyed by Vesuvius in 79 CE, the ruins of Pompeii offer the best evidence we have of life in the Roman Empire. But the eruptions are only part of the story. In The Fires of Vesuvius, acclaimed historian Mary Beard makes sense of the remains. She explores what kind of town it was - more like Calcutta or the Costa del Sol? - and what it can tell us about "ordinary" life there. From sex to politics, food to religion, slavery to literacy, Beard offers us the big picture even as she takes us close enough to the past to smell the bad breath....

Impressively researched and brilliantly told, The History of the Renaissance World offers not just the names, dates, and facts but the memorable characters who illuminate the years between 1100 and 1453 - years that marked a sea change in mankind's perception of the world.

Although he doesn't know anything about the subject (at first), he is eager to learn, and takes information that he gets from the world's leading experts and explains it to us in a way that makes it exciting and relevant.

Historia
It's the first century AD, and Marcus Didius Falco, ancient Rome's favorite son and sometimes palace spy, has just been dealt a lousy blow from the gods: the beautiful, high-born Helena Justina has left him in the dust. So when the Emperor Vespasian calls upon him to investigate an act of treason, Falco is more than ready for a distraction. Disguised as an idle vacationer in the company of his best friend Petronius, Falco travels from the Isle of Capreae to Neapolis and all the way to the great city of Pompeii.

One of my happiest audiobook accidents
Revisado: 06-05-22
The writing, the world building and the deep characterization of every character in this book is so much better than it needed to be. I was expecting fluff. An entertaining detective story in an intriguingly different setting. No fluff here. A story you can't put down featuring people you come to really care about. So good!

Wonderful story, deeper and richer than I expected
Revisado: 06-03-22
Wonderful story, deeper and richer than I expected. The people seem so 3 dimensional and real, and it's so fun to find a film noire style "hard bitten detective on the seedy side of town" story set in ancient rather than modern times. Loved this one!

Historia
Dying is easy. Coming back to life is hard. Miles Vorkosigan should know - having done both once already. Thanks to his quick-thinking staff and the artistry of a medical specialist, Miles' first death wasn't his last. But it does take some recovery, a fact he has been reluctant to admit. When he makes the mistake of returning too soon to duty, he finds himself summoned to face the security chief, Simon Illyan. But Miles' worst nightmares about Illyan are nothing compared to Illyan's own nightmares.

Awesome, as always!
Revisado: 03-06-22
All Bujold is good Bujold - You really just cannot go wrong reading one of her books. It's going to be a great read, always. Fair warning though, You have to have read the previous books in this series to understand this one. One of the greatest strengths of her novels is that each follows a certain group of people through their lives and their changes and their dramas, and if you have just met these characters, it won't mean nearly as much to you.
