Historia
In 1610, Galileo published the Siderius nuncius, or Starry Messenger, a "hurried little masterpiece" in John Heilbron's words. Presenting to the world his remarkable observations using the recently invented telescope, Galileo dramatically challenged our idea of the perfection of the heavens and the centrality of the Earth in the universe. Indeed, the appearance of the little book is regarded as one of the great moments in the history of science.

Historia
If you were taught that the Middle Ages were a time of intellectual stagnation, superstition, and ignorance, you were taught a myth that has been utterly refuted by modern scholarship. As a physicist and historian of science James Hannam shows in his brilliant new book, The Genesis of Science: How the Christian Middle Ages Launched the Scientific Revolution, without the scholarship of the "barbaric" Middle Ages, modern science simply would not exist. The Middle Ages were a time of one intellectual triumph after another.

Enjoying. But the narration wasn't well prepared

This is an interesting book. I wish it had many fewer mispronunciations and fewer misreadings.

Historia
Mankind has a distinct advantage over other terrestrial species: we talk to one another. But how did we acquire the most advanced form of communication on Earth? Daniel L. Everett, a "bombshell" linguist and "instant folk hero" (Tom Wolfe, Harper's), provides in this sweeping history a comprehensive examination of the evolutionary story of language, from the earliest speaking attempts by hominids to the more than 7,000 languages that exist today.

Unconvincing
Revisado: 09-09-19
For an introduction to Everett's ideas, this is the most likely audiobook choice. But I found it unconvincing and repetitive. The narrator is very competent.

Historia
The Tudors are England's most notorious royal family. But, as Leanda de Lisle's gripping new history reveals, they are a family still more extraordinary than the one we thought we knew. The Tudor canon typically starts with the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 before speeding on to Henry VIII and the Reformation. But this leaves out the family's obscure Welsh origins and the ordinary man known as Owen Tudor who would fall (literally) into a queen's lap - and later her bed.

Good. I wish the narrator had better pronunciation

This was published in the US as "Tudor: The Family Story".
More enjoyable, to me, than Ackroyd's "Tudors: The History of England from Henry VIII to Elizabeth I".
A broader history than Borman's "Private Lives of the Tudors".

Good, but regarding its "Audible Kids" claim...
Revisado: 04-13-19
The recording starts out with young children exclaiming "This is Audible Kids!". That's kind of funny. It's probably less kid-friendly than most books, with uncommon words and some use of the s-word.

Historia
The history of the Normans began a long time before 1066. Originating from the 'Norsemen' they were one of the most successful warrior tribes of the Dark Ages that came to dominate Europe from the Baltic Sea to the island of Sicily and the borders of Eastern Europe. Beginning as Viking raiders in the eighth century, the Normans not only changed the landscape of Europe but were changed by their new conquests.

Any additional comments?
This audiobook is:
a) about 11% early Norse culture and history
b) about 9% Viking history
c) about 7% Frankish history in and near to the area that would become Normandy
d) (I haven't listened yet, but I imagine the rest is about the Normans.)

Historia
Gibbon's The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is one of the greatest texts in the English language. In magisterial prose, Gibbon charts the gradual collapse of the Roman rule form Augustus (23 BC - AD 14) to the first of the barbarian kings, Odoacer (476- 490 AD). It is a remarkable account, with the extravagant corruption and depravity of emperors such as Commodus, Caracalla, and Elagabalus contrasted by the towering work of Constantine, Julian, and other remarkable men.

Do you want to know what period volume 1 covers?
Revisado: 10-20-16
Any additional comments?
Volume 1 of this audiobook, after some general discussion, begins in some depth with the reign of Augustus (27 B.C - A.D. 14). Only a very cursory account is given of the period comprising the reigns of the next several emperors, through Antoninus Pius (A.D. 161).
That's as far as I've gotten, but I'll update this, if that's possible.

Historia
In this classic, the world’s expert on language and mind lucidly explains everything you always wanted to know about language: how it works, how children learn it, how it changes, how the brain computes it, and how it evolved. With deft use of examples of humor and wordplay, Steven Pinker weaves our vast knowledge of language into a compelling story: language is a human instinct, wired into our brains by evolution. The Language Instinct received the William James Book Prize from the American Psychological Association....

At the end of the book, there are brief updates, chapter by chapter, on more recent developments. (And it seemed that there wasn't much, of the 1994 material, that was really outdated.)
