A blast from the past: I dare to disagree with this pop-psychology

A bit unscientific and rooted in its late 2010s American ideology of pushing down men. Very far from giving universal truths, it is a relic of a certain time and place. The final nail in the coffin was explaining that men need to have a gentler handshake for women - as if men have not known that for hundreds of years and then added some flimsy evolutionary paychology on top of that. As I said, takes every opportunity to do that. Far from gender equality as it gets (using “her” instead of the neutral “they” which a book rooted in science should do). Ironically, but not surprisingly teaches successful and energetic women to be less agressive and assertive, leading to fewer successful women in our societies overall. The authors admit themselves that tactics they teach lead to them losing many friends in the intro. So take that as you will. The entire book seems like a big test beneath a book on body language: will you bend the knee to me, my practices, and way of seeing the world or do you dare to be the outgroup.

Good. Better than your average strategy book.

Not perfect by any means but better than the author’s other contributions and most self-help or strategy books. He and his publishers do have a good ear for a narrator though.

The author has matured and offers great content that is still relevant a decade on. The book is well structured and emotionally compelling. The narration is, well, masterful.

Offers a few essential truths, however there is a bad air about some of the way this author tackles some of the sensitive subjects he is dealing with and the book does show its age. It is very 1990s and while I love retro, this time, that may not be a good thing.

The narration is great. The content not so much.

The narration is clear and very good. The contents on the other hand – is 50/60 as many people have noted – this is straight out of Trump's notebook. Some of what it says is undoubtedly true but it is only a starter. Applying this book is shallow and ineffective as it gets you 50% there. Even if you win – you only become a puppet of others.

As recent events and years have proven. People without morals or sensibility tend to become puppets of others. They are pretty dumb.

This is the story of this book: helpful, true, and effective but pretty dumb and incomplete.

Because of its main heroes (and the main heroes of its author) – P.T. Barnum (the best of the bunch, but a buffoon and a clown), Machiavelli (failure as a diplomat and statesman), and Nietszche (failure as a philosopher and a ladies man, the original involuntary celibate) never amounted to much in life or developing sincere perspectives of their own.

The book also mentions Castiligione and Talleryand but lacks the subtleness to get what made them tick. Those two and a handful of others are way out of this league.

- Rather than focusing on Kissinger - I would focus on Rockefeller, his puppet master.
- Rather than on Nietszche, I would focus on Plato, the master of philosophy.
- Rather than Tallyeryand, the graceful loser, I would focus on Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, and his unheralded brother who won an empire.

Don't get me wrong. This is not a bad book. But it gives an incomplete education to what power is, how the people who pull strings think and act.

Hopelessly biased in favor of the Borgias

Masterful performance. The professor is a rhetorical master. However, he plays rhetorical games and pretends to strike the neutral ground, while being hopelessly biased in favor of the Borgias. I will gladly listen to the professors other works as he is a delight to listen to, just I do not genuinely feel he struck a balance here. Fair enough?

Well read. Well translated. Well commented. You will be better off after listening to this because you will appreciate the difficulty in attaining peace internally, in relations, in a family and in and between nations.

Hard for the performer to be excited if such as interesting and entertaining subject matter is treated in the style of compiling different inserts from Wikipedia. Also note how recent reviews from real listeners like myself are so different from glowing reviews when this "product" was launched. Make of that what you will. But as a real listener I can tell you this is a "product", an audiobook treated not like a book, but as a poorly thought out way to SEO-optimise the title and content and make some quick money on a popular subject.

Biased against the Greeks, too simple rhetorics

As my headline states. Biased against the Greeks and has too simple of a rhetorical approach of comparing opposites attitudes.

Greeks were highly complimentary of Persians, many worked under the Persian Empire.

Not to speak of that many lived under there.

I appreciate the effort by the Prof. He is truly a professional. But this course is not for me.

The narration is appropriate for a subject like this that needs a thorough attention. The content of the book is interesting enough for the layman, academic and complete novice to Ancient Greek history alike.

A book you probably need to listen a dozen or so times.
