Historia
Timothy Snyder has been called “the leading interpreter of our dark times.” As a historian, he has given us startling reinterpretations of political collapse and mass killing. As a public intellectual, he has turned that knowledge toward counsel and prediction, working against authoritarianism here and abroad. His book On Tyranny has inspired millions around the world to fight for freedom. Now, in this tour de force of political philosophy, he helps us see exactly what we’re fighting for.

Incredibly timely & important read.
Revisado: 12-05-24
Not only is the subject matter excellent and timely, the prose is more beautiful than the vast majority of historians. Professor Snyder is a philosopher as much as he is a historian. And an exceptional writer. EVERY AMERICAN SHOULD READ THIS ONE!

Historia
In They Knew, New York Times bestselling author Sarah Kendzior explores the United States’ “culture of conspiracy,” putting forth a timely and unflinching argument: uncritical faith in broken institutions is as dangerous as false narratives peddled by propagandists. Conspiracy theories are on the rise because officials refuse to enforce accountability for real conspiracies.

READ THIS AUTHOR!
Revisado: 10-13-22
Sarah Kendzior is the ultimate truth teller. She refers to herself as “a nonfiction horror writer” and that is a perfect description. Don’t read it to feel great about things - read it to learn the ugly, ugly truth. Why have you not heard of her? The mainstream media is owned by Goliath corporations so they don’t want us to know what she’s revealing either. This makes it even MORE important to read her. I also recommend her podcast, GaslitNation. She & her cohost Andrea Chulupa (I hope I spelled this right) do this very important work every week.

Historia
The accelerating changes of the past generation have been accompanied by a similarly accelerated amnesia. The 20th century has become "history" at an unprecedented rate. The world of 2007 was so utterly unlike that of even 1987, much less any earlier time, that we have lost touch with our immediate past even before we have begun to make sense of it - and the results are proving calamitous.

Revisado: 07-03-22
Tony Judt has a supremely gifted mind and this book is spectacular. Revisiting the issues from across the century is a smart way at. A brilliant walk down memory lane with contemporary analysis. Mr. Judt makes the work very east ygy play.
A great book. In fact, it’s most definitely the most reflective of Mr. Judt’s endnote:

Historia
The story of Donald Trump’s rise to power is the story of a buried American history - buried because people in power liked it that way. It was visible without being seen, influential without being named, ubiquitous without being overt. Sarah Kendzior’s Hiding in Plain Sight pulls back the veil on a history spanning decades, a history of an American autocrat in the making. In doing so, she reveals how our continual loss of freedom, the rise of consolidated corruption, and the secrets behind a burgeoning autocratic United States have been hiding in plain sight for decades.

Essential, no… MANDATORY reading if you love America
Revisado: 12-11-21
If you read or listen to ONE BOOK, listen to this one; and prepare to be terrified at the real conspiracy of a global criminal syndicate to get control of the most powerful military the world has ever known (and though no cannibalism or devil worship) even includes international child sex trafficking. It seems the GQP affinity for projection includes the global conspiracy controlling things behind the scenes, but very different than what Q has told its cult members.
Extremely well researched, well written, and clear picture that every American must get acquainted with before time runs out on the Republic the Founders handed us along with the warning… “IF you can keep it.”

At a time when democracy in the United States is endangered as never before, Ben Rhodes spent years traveling the world to understand why. He visited dozens of countries, meeting with politicians and activists confronting the same nationalism and authoritarianism that are tearing America apart. Along the way, he discusses the growing authoritarianism of Vladimir Putin, and his aggression toward Ukraine, with the foremost opposition leader in Russia.

Revisado: 06-17-21
This is a book that every interested American should read. First, it’s beautifully written which makes it a pleasant read. A talent not all those who write a book after leaving government.
This is riveting journey the author takes you along with him on an incredibly honest assessment of his that personal journey after leaving eight (8) years in government, the palpable sense of disillusionment the author struggles with after serving with such optimism which fits in perfectly with a narrative that also includes a painfully honest assessment of the nation he served for nearly a decade.
Cannot recommend this book enough. It’s more about the world and America’s place in it than a book about Mr. Rhodes time in government. Such an enlightened work; one for which Ben Rhodes earned my admiration.

Historia
Here is the final book of unparalleled historian Tony Judt. Where Judt’s masterpiece Postwar redefined the history of modern Europe by uniting the stories of its eastern and western halves, Thinking the Twentieth Century unites the century’s conflicted intellectual history into a single soaring narrative. The 20th century comes to life as the age of ideas - a time when, for good or for ill, the thoughts of the few reigned over the lives of the many.

Revisado: 05-15-21
This is being a fly on the wall for an incredibly fascinating intellectual discussion between two brilliant minds. Notice I don’t limit these scholars to their label of historian, because they are clearly so much more. I consider myself fairly educated and well read, yet I never heard of many of the authors and works these men referee off the top of their heads as if I’m talking about the ‘82 Chicago Cubs lineup - except my knowledge is baseball while theirs spans topics of life and death importance, not a child’s memory of his first love in baseball.
I enjoyed these men in conversation as much as I did any single volume non-fiction book I’ve ever spent time with. If you love history, politics, and important issues... you will enjoy this book. I liken it to my years of enjoyment of Charlie Rose’s discussions with great minds. Sucks for his victims that Charlie was a sexual predator. That one hurt because I respected Charlie and never in a hundred years would have guessed his disgusting sickness. Regardless, his work was stellar and I enjoyed it for decades (you think you know someone, but you don’t). I digress.
Get this book! You can return it if you don’t like it, but if you like history I suspect you will love this one.

Historia
Why did democracy fall apart so quickly and completely in Germany in the 1930s? How did a democratic government allow Adolf Hitler to seize power? In this dramatic audiobook, Benjamin Carter Hett answers these questions, and the story he tells has disturbing resonances for our own time. Benjamin Carter Hett is one of America’s leading scholars of 20th-century Germany and a gifted storyteller whose portraits of the feckless politicians of the Weimar Republic show how fragile democracy can be when those in power do not respect it.

Frighteningly familiar
Revisado: 08-07-20
Listening to this title in August of 2020, I cannot be more stunned at just how similar the death of their republic and our own are. We are much further down the road to fascism than even I knew. I will be totally surprised if Trump does NOT try and pull off a power grab - the evidence of the most blatant attempts to suppress the vote are already public (see the United States Postal Service), and they are refusing to make public a redacted report of the IC public so citizens are armed with knowledge about what foreign powers are doing - and it must be done BEFORE the election. The open acceptance of the American Right of fascism is far easier to understand after reading this timely & important work.

Historia
At the end of the 1980s, when the Cold War ended, many, including former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, believed that democracy had triumphed politically once and for all. Yet nearly 30 years later, the direction of history no longer seems certain. A repressive and destructive force has begun to reemerge on the global stage - sweeping across Europe, parts of Asia, and the United States - that to Albright, looks very much like fascism.

A timely, must read on the subject matter. Not Trump bashing. Very enlightening.
Revisado: 07-07-18
Secretary Albright began this book before the election of Donald Trump so this is not s reactionary book bashing Trump. To the contrary, it is a sober, well-reasoned, and thorough history of Fascism from someone that lived it as a diplomat and as far back as her earliest memories. She has a perspective on the subject that enriches her perspective and the work itself. So many personal anecdotes along with the excellent scholarship we have come to expect from Madeline Albright.
Highly recommended for anyone that wants to enrich their understand of fascism and its current spread across Europe & now America.
