No mystery here.
Revisado: 03-14-24
The bad guys were apparent from their introduction. Heroin and hero left me saying “don’t do it” every time. Was wishing the main characters were smarter and the solutions less cliche. Narration was lively although some interpretations didn’t fit the situation.

It is an ordinary Thursday, and things should finally be returning to normal. Except trouble is never far away where the Thursday Murder Club are concerned. A decade-old cold case—their favorite kind--leads them to a local news legend and a murder with no body and no answers. Then a new foe pays Elizabeth a visit. Her mission? Kill or be killed. Absolutely loved the narration! Story is excellent too!
Revisado: 09-14-23
Great story, characters I would love to be friends with, but what really makes this book shine is Fiona Shaw’s performance! It’s become one of my favorite things to listen to just for the comfort and ease of her voice. The quiet almost whisper lends an intimacy that is perfect for the way the story is written, especially the scenes of Joyce writing in her diary. The characterizations are distinct but not strained, action scenes and emotional scenes come across very naturally. This could be my favorite audiobook performance and I’m thrilled that Ms Shaw is also doing the next book.

Historia
Annette Joseph's years in Italy revealed this truth: Italy, in all its multifaceted, glorious history and culture has to be experienced in full. Over almost three decades, Italy has fed, entertained, confused, excited, lured, promised, lied, satisfied, occasionally disappointed, and utterly enchanted her. She's left, but can't stay away - she'll always return. Always. Just like a beloved partner....

I wanted to hear what was wonderful and maybe interesting about life in Italy.
Revisado: 02-10-23
I soon began skipping chapters about all of her difficulties and eventually decided not to finish the book. Complaining about real estate problems and unpleasant guest experiences fills much more space than anything good or fun that happened.

Historia
Italy, 1945. "Where am I"? The young man wakes, bewildered. He sees olive trees against a bright blue sky. A soft voice soothes him. "We saw you fall from your plane. The parachute saved you". He remembers nothing of his life, or the war that has torn the world apart...but where does he belong? England, present day. Antique-shop-owner Susannah wipes away a tear as she tidies her grandmother’s belongings. Elsie’s memories are fading, and every day Susannah feels further away from her only remaining family.

Well told story.
Revisado: 01-22-23
This is not all cozy romance. There is romance, also mystery, also uncomfortable episodes. What gives it more meat than most stories is the element of human survivorship and common bonds formed during hard times. Italy stars through her landscapes, culture, and people. Stephanie Lane gives a very enjoyable performance.

Historia
The year 1924. After six months in Hollywood, young British widow Emma Blackstone has come to love her new employer, glamourous movie-star Kitty Flint — even if her late husband’s sister is one of the worst actresses she’s ever seen. Looking after Kitty and her three adorable Pekinese dogs isn’t work academically minded Emma dreamed of, but Kitty rescued her when she was all alone in the world. Now, the worst thing she has to worry about is the shocking historical inaccuracies of the films Kitty stars in.

Thoroughly enjoyed the story! Not so much the narrator.
Revisado: 05-16-22
I was thrilled to find this return to Hollywood from Barabara Hambly. My affection for these characters continues to grow as their lives develop. Ms Hambly’s wonderful descriptions bring the setting brilliantly to life as she does in any world about which she writes. It is not in any way a repeat of Rat God but a completely different story with the same characters.
Sadly I did not enjoy the reader’s performance with repetitive odd emphasis on words like to and from, or inappropriate pauses, and terrible mispronunciation of historical names. This pattern of reading often indicates something other than the actual meaning of the sentence and has little to do with the action or emotion of the passage. It distracts from the story in a way that gets very old by the time the action really gets going.

Danger, excitement and love - this is how the glamorous Phryne Fisher is determined to live her life in her second enticing adventure. Walking the wings of a Tiger Moth plane in full flight ought to be enough excitement for most people, but not Phryne Fisher, amateur detective, woman of mystery, as delectable as the finest chocolate and as sharp as razor blades.

In search of excitement, she sets her sights on a spot of detective work in Melbourne, Australia. And so mystery and the beautiful Russian dancer, Sasha de Lisse, appear in her life. From then on it's all cocaine and communism until her adventure reaches its steamy end in the Turkish baths of Little Lonsdale Street.

Enjoyable but the reader is not up to snuff.
Revisado: 03-03-18
Fun, lighthearted listening but unfortunately much of the fun is lost by the reader falling into monotonous, repetitive phrasing. While her dialogue and characters are good, Many good ideas on the writer’s part are thrown away in downturned phrases of everyday-ness. Amazingly the phrasing sounds just like Susan Duerdon, who makes several of my favorite books unlistenable.

A romantic mystery but very little to do with true spying.

The mystery and the romance are both rather predictable. From the title I hoped for some international intrigue but the spy part was very disappointing as a mere social occasion of spying on a prince and his girlfriend and had nothing to do with the actual plot.

I enjoyed the book, there is a lot to learn here. But the book is supposed to be accompanied by some worksheets on a PDF file. Unfortunately books purchased on Audible do not include that material. This is the second book I have purchased from Audible that should have had an accompanying file.
