Historia
In this ambitious audiobook, best-selling author Sanjeev Sanyal chronicles the grand sweep of history from East Africa to Australia, conjuring the great cities of Angkor and Vijayanagar, medieval Arab empires, and Chinese "treasure fleets" in rich, vivid detail. He explores remote archaeological sites, maritime trading networks, and half-forgotten oral tales to challenge established historical narratives with fresh evidence. Shining new light on medieval geopolitics and long-lost cities, The Ocean of Churn is a mesmerizing journey into the heart of a vibrant civilization.

Historia
A globe shows the world we think we know: neatly delineated sovereign nations that grant or restrict their citizens’ rights. Beneath, above, and tucked inside their borders, however, another universe has been engineered into existence. It consists of thousands of extraterritorial zones that operate largely autonomously, and increasingly for the benefit of the wealthiest individuals and corporations. Atossa Abrahamian traces the rise of this hidden globe to thirteenth-century Switzerland, where poor cantons marketed their only commodity.

why a male narrator?
Revisado: 12-27-24
I didn't notice until after purchasing that this book written by a woman was narrated by a man; huge distracting disappointment. The content is great, both interesting+illuminating and distressing+disheartening.
Worth reading.

Historia
The daughter of slaves, Madam C.J. Walker was orphaned at seven, married at 14, and widowed at 20. She spent the better part of the next two decades laboring as a washerwoman for $1.50 a week. Then - with the discovery of a revolutionary hair care formula for Black women - everything changed. By her death in 1919, Walker managed to overcome astonishing odds: Building a storied beauty empire from the ground up that would be run by four generations of Walker women until its sale in 1985.

tedious telling
Revisado: 07-17-22
I wish this incredible story was told in a less stilted and tedious way. I persisted in listening because the historical details were important and interesting, but so disappointed with the telling.
I actually listened at 1.25 speed, and that made it more bearable

worth it for the tactics/theory you can glean
Revisado: 05-21-22
This book, written in 2019, did not age well. Cases in point:
- Satell is harshly critical of Black Lives Matter, he needs to check his racism
- Ukraine commentary and anecdotes are already very out dated
The basic tenets laid out in the book are solid, but the vehicle is tedious, repetitive, and droningly montonous. Male, white centric (#MeToo anyone?); though I read this because of mention of it in All The White Friends I Couldn't Keep By Andre Henry.
I mean, it's worth it for the tactics/theory you can glean, but it won't be fun...

Historia
Augustin Fresnel (1788–1827) shocked the scientific elite with his unique understanding of the physics of light. The lens he invented was a brilliant feat of engineering that made lighthouses blaze many times brighter, farther, and more efficiently. Battling the establishment, his own poor health, and the limited technology of the time, Fresnel was able to achieve his goal of illuminating the entire French coast. At first, the British sought to outdo the new Fresnel-equipped lighthouses as a matter of national pride.

the narration almost completely ruined this book for me. Flat and dry with emphasis on many of the wrong places.
simple words misread when they made zero contextual sense. example: preserve instead of persevere.
the French pronunciations may have been correct, bit they felt forced and exoticized. The English and Scottish place names were butchered.
The story itself was good and interesting, if a little belaboured at times.
I persevered (not preserved!) with it because of a childhood awe of lighthouse lenses.

Historia
When his mother passed away at the age of 78, Sherman Alexie responded the only way he knew how: He wrote. The result is this stunning memoir. Featuring 78 poems and 78 essays, Alexie shares raw, angry, funny, profane, tender memories of a childhood few can imagine - growing up dirt poor on an Indian reservation, one of four children raised by alcoholic parents. Throughout, a portrait emerges of his mother as a beautiful, mercurial, abusive, intelligent, complicated woman.

This book is heartbreaking, eye-opening, beautiful. I recommend listening to Sherman Alexie reading it to you - his emphasis and tears add to the experience.
I wish everyone would listen!
