Historia
All drummer Vienna Taylor ever wanted was to make music. If that came with fame, she’d take it—as long as her best friend, guitarist Madison Pierce, was sharing the spotlight and singing lead. And with their new all-female pop rock band gaining traction, soon everyone would hear their songs… Except, on the way to an event, the Bittersweet’s van careened off an icy mountain road during a blizzard—leaving one member dead and another severely injured. In order to survive the frigid night, the rest took shelter in a nearby abandoned cabin.

Overall Good
Revisado: 01-29-25
Overall, I liked this book. But, I think there could have been less written about high school. Also, the ending could have gone in two obvious but very different directions. I would have preferred the one not taken in the book.
The narrator was excellent.

Almost 5 Out of 5
Revisado: 12-27-24
I only give 5 stars to books that have become my all time favorites. While this book didn't quite make it to that level, it was very close. It deserves 4 1/2 stars.
The emphasis on insects and spiders made it very unique, compared to other police procedurals. I also really like the character of Vanessa Marwood. I could imagine this book being a great movie.

What Was the Point?
Revisado: 06-14-24
I've read all of the books in this series and, overall, I've really enjoyed them. But, even from the prequel short story, the author wrote sections that I didn't like and considered irrelevant. In that prequel, it was all the stuff about the house they were building. Then, for the next several books, it was the grief Matilda had about her husband. Now, for Book 7, it's a story about a spree killer.
I, and apparently most other fans of this series, prefer books about individual murder cases and the twists and turns until the murderer is caught, not a story about a (apparently superhuman) spree killer.
Also, I found several situations in this book to be laughably unrealistic. An early prison scene intended to show how powerful the villian was, many actions by the police, and several actions of the spree killer would NEVER have gone that way in real life.
As always, the narrator was great.
I bought the next two books. I really hope they return to the earlier form.

I loved everything about this book. From the very beginning, it had the tone I like in a mystery. Close to the end, I knew I had figured out the killer. Then it changed. Then it changed AGAIN... and then the book ended. Wow!

Historia
Police Sergeant William South has a good reason to shy away from murder investigations: He is a murderer himself. A methodical, diligent, and exceptionally bright detective, South is an avid birdwatcher and trusted figure in his small town on the rugged Kentish coast. He also lives with the deeply buried secret that, as a child in Northern Ireland, he may have killed a man. When a fellow birdwatcher is found murdered in his remote home, South's world flips.

Quirky, But Not Great
Revisado: 11-26-22
The birdwatching references made the story kind of quirky. But, overall, it was very slow and didn't get really interesting until about the last hour. Both main characters seemed to always be either too nice or too mean for the situation. The childhood flashbacks were interesting, though. The narration would have been fine, but the volume decreased drastically every time it switched to his childhood.

Historia
Just two years ago, the media turned Detective John Spader into a hero. He'd caught a twisted serial killer terrorizing Massachusetts, and the "Jack of Spades," as the media dubbed Spader, was born. But when the murderer walked free on a technicality - free to kill again - the public turned on Spader. Now a new serial killer is on the loose. He wears the silly, gap-toothed, grinning mask of Galaxo, Starboy Avenger! - a cartoon alien of unparalleled popularity with children.

Historia
Happy Doll is a charming, if occasionally inexpert, private detective living just one sheer cliff drop beneath the Hollywood sign with his beloved half-Chihuahua half-Terrier, George. A veteran of both the Navy and LAPD, Doll supplements his meager income as a P.I. by working through the night at a local Thai spa that offers its clients a number of special services. Armed with his 16-inch steel telescopic baton, biting dry humor, and just a bit of a hero complex, the ex-cop sets out to protect the women who work there from clients who have trouble understanding the word "no".

This Writer Shouldn't Narrate
Revisado: 06-24-22
This story was pretty good, even though the main character suffered through a lot of horrible things. But, I would have enjoyed it much more with a different narrator. The writer narrated mostly in monotone and ran the dialogue together with the description of who was talking (e.g. "I don't want to diehesaid").

5 Stars
Revisado: 03-07-22
The great: Bob Hoon is a great character. The story was interesting, and I loved the humor. The narration was also excellent.
The less than great: I'm not normally squeamish, but some of the fight/torture scenes did make me squirm. That could be seen as a testament to how well the book is written, however. Also, as another reviewer pointed out, I really wished Kirk had finished the story arc in this book and started a new one in the next book instead of having it continue.
Despite my minor nitpicks, this book is definitely worth 5 stars.
