Good characters but too many metaphors and similes.

The main character is kind of annoying but I like all of the other characters. Good story but the magic system isn’t really explained enough.

All of her books are so good, I hate every end. So beautifully written. She develops characters so masterfully.

Historia
Boston, 1662. Mary Deerfield is 24 years old. Her skin is porcelain, her eyes delft blue, and in England she might have had many suitors. But here in the New World, amid this community of saints, Mary is the second wife of Thomas Deerfield, a man as cruel as he is powerful. When Thomas, prone to drunken rage, drives a three-tined fork into the back of Mary's hand, she resolves that she must divorce him to save her life.

I really enjoyed the story and characters. My only complaint is the narrator. She was kind of stiff in her reading. Also, because the main characters are from England, I think they should have had a British narrator.

Revisado: 08-13-24
I keep trying this author and am disappointed every time. She picks subject matters that are so interesting and then ruins them with bland writing and poor research. It’s so repetitive and the characters talk forever about doing something and nothing happens forever. Also repetitive with words like chuckled which grates on my nerves. I chuckled he chuckled etc. never again. Don’t waste your credit or in my case money, which now audible won’t let you return a title if paid with something other than a credit.

Making a much-anticipated return to the world of Hild, Nicola Griffith’s Menewood transports listeners back to seventh-century Britain, a land of rival kings and religions poised for epochal change. Hild is no longer the bright child who made a place in Edwin Overking’s court with her seemingly supernatural insight. She is eighteen, honed and tested, the formidable lady of Elmet, now building her personal stronghold in the valley of Menewood.

So bad, but I really wanted to like it.
Revisado: 11-08-23
The story idea is really interesting and I wanted to like it, but the main characters are so annoying. The mother is an idiot and there is way too much boring and repetitive dialogue that doesn’t move the story forward. Some of the other characters are about as complex as an episode of Scooby Doo.
Also, the narrator does a terrible growling voice for the mother and others that gets in my nerves.
Do not be fooled by the Gilmore girls/Practical magic comparison.
