Historia
In the fall of 2012, scientists at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland, embarked on a series of high-energy experiments. No one knows exactly what went wrong, but in the blink of an eye, thousands of possible universes all condensed into a single reality.... Between a desert and a dried up sea lies the town of Watering Hole, the only oasis for miles and the home of our intrepid heroes Shaani and Xoota. After some rather harrowing adventures in the desert, they are followed home by a swarm of empathic earwigs.

This is a fun tale and a very enjoyable listen
Revisado: 08-17-23
Most DnD/Roleplaying adaptations try to steer clear of the 'party' and the 'quest'. This book embraces it and gives us a tale of exploration and friendship with lovable characters (and one not so lovable). Thoroughly enjoyed it and wished there would be more.

Historia
Experience New York Times best-selling author Richard Baker’s classic novel set in the high-fantasy world of the Forgotten Realms. Accosted by bullies on a forest trail, Aeron had no way of knowing that the confrontation would change his life forever. Accused of a crime for which he bears no blame, he is pursued deep into the forests of the Maerchwood. First rescued, and then tutored, by the mysterious Storm Walker, he discovers a previously undreamed-of talent for magic, and his life is swept up in the study of the arcane arts, until the very principles of magic, and indeed the future of Faern, come under attack

A decent Forgotten Realms story
Revisado: 09-22-21
I am a big fan of Richard Baker. The Last Mythal Trilogy is one of my favorite trilogies period (not just Forgotten Realms) and I like his Sword Mage series as well. I think this is his first book and it shows a bit. The main villain was not that interesting to me and the I never felt invested in any of the protagonists.
If you want some FR, this will do. But if you haven’t read Last Mythal go with that instead.

This one is another winner from the author
Revisado: 07-23-21
Before I bought this I read a bunch of reviews. I was worried when I saw some who loved the first one, but didn't seem to like this one as much. Part of me can see where they are coming from. This second book might not be as much fun as the first, but it also just might be better. In the first book Clay and Gabe took center stage and were very relatable. In this book it is the Ink Witch and Bloody Rose herself that shine, but the rest of the cast have their moments as well.
Here is the deal...with Kings of the Wyld we got this epic level book that easily could have been two books. The same is true here. The author could have easily broken it up. But instead he is like, "Here you go. One Audible credit for all this. Its a steal."
And it is!

Historia
A retired group of legendary mercenaries get the band back together for one last impossible mission in this award-winning debut epic fantasy. Clay Cooper and his band were once the best of the best, the most feared and renowned crew of mercenaries this side of the Heartwyld. Their glory days long past, the mercs have grown apart and grown old, fat, drunk, or a combination of the three. Then an ex-bandmate turns up at Clay's door with a plea for help - the kind of mission that only the very brave or the very stupid would sign up for. It's time to get the band back together.

Aging Rock Stars meets Fantasy
Revisado: 07-07-21
This book has a ton of humor. I had a few laugh so hard I was almost crying moments. But it also has heart. This book is basically about friendship and family. The group of adventurers who have deep ties and a close connection is a trope of the fantasy genre. If that trope appeal to you, you are probably going to love it (like I did). I'm looking forward to checking out Bloody Rose.

Revisado: 05-18-21
The last story of the anthology is worth the price of admission. For those of you who like the Last Mythal series, you will like this short story by Baker. If you have read Cunningham’s stuff about Moonblades you’ll appreciate it even more.

Very interesting characters and fun set up...
Revisado: 04-10-21
I've read two of the Shadowbane novels by de Bie (will get to the third one eventually) and Ghostwalker and now this story. I generally like his stories, but I have mixed feelings. Love his characters. They are very Forgotten Realms and are generally fun builds. This is true here. The main character, Fox at Twilight, is very fun. You can tell de Bie put a lot of thought into her back story. But this is also a problem as she makes very strange decision off of this back story and, since we don't know it (and it is only alluded to), we are just left confused at times. Plus I wish we had gotten to know some of the characters more. Gargan was fine as the silent presence, but, for example, de Bie just seemed to be developing Teslin's character (the character on the cover) when she suddenly seems to have a personality shift and then we get very little interaction with her.
Performance for Audible takes some getting used to, but it serves its purpose.

Audio took some getting used to, but good story!
Revisado: 02-28-21
I almost didn't get this because of all the complaints about the narration, but while the reader is fast paced he is clear and understandable. You get used to it after awhile. Soon I didn't even notice it. Story was good. I really enjoyed these characters. I enjoyed the setting as well. This is not a complicated story. It is fairly straight forward and the characters are really endearing.
I really enjoyed the world building and how House Serrat tries to keep their secrets, secret.
The ending felt a little rushed, but that was okay. I did want to see more of these characters so I was disappointed when I got to the end and there were no further books of their adventures.

Epic struggle...on a non-epic scale
Revisado: 06-21-20
Richard Baker first came to my attention as one of the authors in the War of the Spider Queen saga. On a whim I then decided to check out his Last Mythal Series and wow. That was an epic adventure spanning all around Faerun and the locations were beautifully described. With this series Baker brings down the stakes and the scale. Greater Faerun probably doesn't care too much what happens to the little city of Hulburg, but to the people who live there it is home and the stakes are very high indeed. Baker still takes us on a ride around the Moonsea and beyond (no spoilers). I quite enjoyed this book. I didn't enjoy it as much as the Last Mythal because I had issues with the main character. By the end of the first book you are thinking, "Okay...you are 30 now, time to take some responsibility. But he makes excuses, gets distracted, and refuses to see what is right in front of him for two more books until he finally comes to his senses. It was a bit frustrating (but likely necessary to the story arc, but it made him less relatable for me).

There is a great dungeon crawl in here!!!
Revisado: 05-07-18
A lot of this book focuses on the relationship between Farideh and the devil she is bound to (Lorcan). I found myself wanting to scream at the audio book, "Quit being so stupid, Farideh! He is a manipulative, controlling, BASTARD!!!" But that is the point, isn't it? As frustrating as it is to read about a teenager in basically an abusive relationship (mostly mental abuse) it is well done and is believable.
Meanwhile her sister Havilar continues to be a fun contrast.
A good deal of this book deals with a party in a dungeon crawl complete with traps, ancient secrets, and party members with contrasting goals. I thought this part was very well done and I really enjoyed the unraveling of the mystery of the place.
All in all a great listen. The narrator does a good job of given each character a 'voice' as well.

Fun relationship between characters
Revisado: 04-14-18
Got this book as I wanted nostalgic level fantasy. When I first started listening I felt I made a big mistake because when I used to play D&D there were no tieflings, dragonborn, warlocks, etc. So I had little initial connection to the characters. But the twin tiefling sisters started winning me over, little by little, and by the end of the book I was hooked. Fun read.
