Historia
In North Devon, where two rivers converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his estranged father’s funeral takes place. On the day Matthew left the strict evangelical community he grew up in, he lost his family, too. Now, as he turns and walks away again, he receives a call from one of his team. A body has been found on the beach nearby: a man with a tattoo of an albatross on his neck, stabbed to death. The case calls Matthew back to the people and places of his past, as deadly secrets hidden at their hearts are revealed.

Unable to establish a connection
Revisado: 02-17-25
I bailed by chapter 16. There is a murder mystery in here somewhere, but the book is just a parade of pointless unengaging characters. The downbeat clipped reading performance was ok but did not help.
I almost always finish books I start, even if it evolves that I don’t like them. This book was so uninteresting I couldn’t even do that.
It might be better as a tv movie.

Classic sci-fi, poor performance
Revisado: 11-22-24
Revisiting the berserker stories for the first time in decades. Like many audiobook users, I drive a lot. Audiobooks are interestingly different from reading. At their best (think Ray Porter) the mental world created by the narrator may be richer than you would be able to create for yourself when reading. At their worst, the narrator’s performance detracts from the story and can really interfere with your enjoyment. Unfortunately that’s the case here. The narration is a flat monotone with constant long pauses within sentences, with no purpose. The material is old school classic, but would be much better if I was reading it. Can’t recommend.

Historia
In 2007, the Center for Automation in Nanobiotech (CAN) outlined the hardware and software platforms that would one day allow robots smaller than human cells to make medical diagnoses, conduct repairs, and even self-propagate. In the same year, the CBS network re-aired a program about the effects of propranolol on sufferers of extreme trauma. A simple pill, it had been discovered, could wipe out the memory of any traumatic event. At almost the same moment in humanity’s broad history, mankind discovered the means for bringing about its utter downfall. And the ability to forget it ever happened.

Perspective change,
Revisado: 03-04-24
Many questions answered. It’s tough to follow up on a singularly unique idea. Shift does a good (but not great) job. The format of jumping back and forth in time over hundreds of years is especially problematic for an audio book. Knowing what I know now, I would have been better off with the print edition. Still, an enjoyable experience.

Pleasant and engaging
Revisado: 10-01-23
The author does a good job, capturing the spirit of the original works. And the stories are designed to fill-in gaps in Holmes and Watson‘s careers. The narration is pleasant, but oddly down beat. I got used to it, but can use one of Watson‘s terms, his voice could act as a soporific. Recommended to any fans looking for a well done straight up addition to the original Canon

Bob Johansson didn't believe in an afterlife, so waking up after being killed in a car accident was a shock. To add to the surprise, he is now a sentient computer and the controlling intelligence for a Von Neumann probe. Bob and his copies have been spreading out from Earth for 40 years now, looking for habitable planets. But that's the only part of the plan that's still in one piece.

Revisado: 08-24-23
But do them in order. No sequel letdown. Enrichment and expansion of the Bobiverse is handled really well! I think most people will become hooked, if they weren’t already, on additional books.
Ray Porter brings things alive. For me it’s actually better than reading. His performance creates depth I don’t think my own brain would.

But it has only vague memories of the massacre that spawned that title, and it wants to know more. Teaming up with a Research Transport vessel named ART (you don't want to know what the "A" stands for), Murderbot heads to the mining facility where it went rogue.

Good, original story
Revisado: 06-10-23
But the star here is Kevin R Free. He brings the story alive beyond what my mind would have done if I was reading the books. Normally I listen to audiobooks when I’m driving or other times when I can’t read. This is one of those relatively rare times when the performance is so good the audiobook is actually better than good old fashion reading.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

Something lacking
Revisado: 03-04-23
I’ve been thinking about what to say for days now. I’ve read the other reviews. I’ve seen both movies. (But I haven’t had time to reread the book). All that said, there’s something artificial, stilted about this audiobook. Yes the hybrid ensemble approach is a bit odd. The performances are professional, although not special.
Both movies were disappointing in different ways.
I think it’s possible that there is something about the way Dune is written that makes the movie and audiobook mediums inappropriate. It’s filled with fascinating characters and concepts, but it’s also pedantic. I don’t know why, but the latter aspect seems to be emphasized in audio and movie formats. I guess when we are reading, we can adjust those things in our minds as needed.
All that said, listening to the audiobook, ultimately just came across as pointless. So many other good audiobooks to spend time with.

Sherlock Holmes thrives on danger. Sudden knife attacks, being stalked, and facing a network of assassins present little more than a cheery break in the monotony. But the enigmatic Lady Beatrice presents danger of a different kind. Is she a murderer or a potential victim? Or something even more perilous? Uncovering her secrets could change Holmes's life forever, and in ways even he cannot anticipate.

Different and enjoyable
Revisado: 10-22-22
Written from Sherlock’s point of view instead of Watson’s. The really unique thing here is extending Holmes behavior to places that, in a vacuum, might seem impossible but the author makes them entirely believable. In addition the mysteries extend from the trivial and personal to those of global importance. A good job of introducing some unusual elements while maintaining all of the usual and expected ones in top form.

Historia
In The Butchering Art, the historian Lindsey Fitzharris reveals the shocking world of 19th-century surgery on the eve of profound transformation. She conjures up early operating theaters - no place for the squeamish - and surgeons, working before anesthesia, who were lauded for their speed and brute strength. They were baffled by the persistent infections that kept mortality rates stubbornly high. A young, melancholy Quaker surgeon named Joseph Lister would solve the deadly riddle and change the course of history.

Terrific if you enjoy medical history
Revisado: 10-16-22
I can’t imagine how the book or the performance could be improved upon. If you have any interest in medical history this should be most enjoyable for you. It really is amazing how science, in the 100 year period between the beginning and end of the 19th century, transformed medicine and surgery from thousands of year of ineffective ignorance to recognizably modern.

Starship troopers was an OK book when I was eight or nine years old in the 50s. This book is really not that much better now. As one other reviewer said, file this away as preteen dystopian fiction and then forget about it
