Historia
Farming is the world's greatest cause of environmental destruction - and the one we are least prepared to talk about. We criticize urban sprawl, but farming sprawls across 30 times as much land. We have ploughed, fenced and grazed great tracts of the planet, felling forests, killing wildlife, and poisoning rivers and oceans to feed ourselves. Yet millions still go hungry.

This book spent as much time if not more time talking about the negatives of meat production. It was much less about farming and more trying to convince the listener become a vegan. Vegans will love this and do a lot of head nodding. Those who eat meat will consider turning it off and returning.

Historia
The 1975 Masters Tournament always seemed destined for the record books. A veritable Hall of Fame list of competitors had gathered that spring in Augusta, Georgia, for the game's most famous event, including Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Hale Irwin, Billy Casper, and Sam Snead. The lead-up had been dominated by Lee Elder, the first black golfer ever invited to the exclusive club's tourney. But by the weekend, the tournament turned into a showdown between the three heavyweights of the time: Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, and Tom Weiskopf.

Loved It!
Revisado: 04-07-24
Well written. Good info on the three lead characters. Builds tension even though I knew who was going to win! Narrator mispronounced a word or two like hosel and Doral but then again, English is super tough. (I am not being sarcastic. It is tough.)
Great book! I grew up a golfer and got into golf right after this Masters so I didn’t watch it live. It was always the Masters that had legendary status. Great to have the backstory and know of all the other big things that happened during the 1975 tournament.

Historia
Before the discovery of insulin, diabetes was treated almost exclusively through diet, from subsistence on meat, to reliance on fats, to repeated fasting and near-starvation regimens. After two centuries of conflicting medical advice, most authorities today believe that those with diabetes can have the same dietary freedom enjoyed by the rest of us, leaving the job of controlling their disease to insulin therapy and other blood-sugar-lowering medications.

Very thoroughly covered diabetes, from early treatments/ perceptions to modern day. No one researches a topic to greater depths. Some of his previous work is covered again here, but relayed in a different way. Just guessing, but done so to address critics of his other books. Whether you are new to Mr. Taubes work or have read all of it, this is most definitely worth your time.

Historia
In this fascinating history spanning continents and centuries, historian David Wootton offers a lively defense of science, revealing why the Scientific Revolution was truly the greatest event in our history. The Invention of Science goes back 500 years in time to chronicle this crucial transformation, exploring the factors that led to its birth and the people who made it happen. Wootton argues that the Scientific Revolution was actually five separate yet concurrent events that developed independently.

Good but too much
Revisado: 07-27-21
Excellent book. Great way of looking at science. My only issue was its length. I felt as if the author kept repeating themselves. This would probably be a better book in the abridged version. If that doesn’t exist, however, it is still well worth the listen.

He took on the subject of diet to chase down the science. He was not in it to sell a diet. That’s why this is so believable. It totally changed my thoughts of food. I’ve always struggled with weight. Now it’s effortless.
I cannot recommend this book enough.

Historia
Among Americans, diabetes is more prevalent today than ever. Obesity is at epidemic proportions; nearly 10% of children are thought to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And sugar is at the root of these, and other, critical, society-wide, health-related problems. With his signature command of both science and straight talk, Gary Taubes delves into Americans' history with sugar: its uses as a preservative, as an additive in cigarettes, the contemporary overuse of high-fructose corn syrup.

He got into nutrition without an agenda unlike so many of the others whose career would crumble if their ideas were to be proven false. If you have read his work before, you’ll love it. If he is new to you, be prepared to be taken down a path that may lead you to question all you know about nutrition. Great read.

Historia
Once a Runner captures the essence of what it means to be a competitive runner; to devote your entire existence to a single-minded pursuit of excellence. It has become one of the most beloved sports novels ever written. Originally self-published in 1978 and sold at road races out of the trunk of the author's car, reading the book became a rite of passage for many runners, and tattered copies were handed down like sacred texts from generation to generation.

Transformative
Revisado: 04-27-20
This book has the power to change your life after you read it. In these strange times, the book will help put your mind in a good place. It will help give you the power to deal with those things in which you have control and focus on what is truly important to you. It is the only book that I immediately started over again after finishing.
I saw several bad comments about narration. This is not a novel that needs different voices or emotions implied through tone. I would never have thought to point that out. There is nothing to keep you from listening to this book and hopefully, change your life, if only for a short time.
