I'll first admit that I am not a fan of the raunchiness deeply embedded in this memoir, but one should expect it since this is Ali Wong. If you look beyond all of that, there's some real life lessons, truth, and a different perspective of how to view both life and societal norms. As someone who tied herself down by cultural norms and by my own expectations of who I thought I should be, I sincerely wish I could have read this book early on in life and had learned not to deprive myself of so many experiences. But! This is no way means that I still can't make different choices nor that I regret the life I've had until now. Even if you find yourself not being able to connect to most of her stories, they are necessary to help you really appreciate her work through her husband's perspective. Overall, this book is an unapologetic and raw memoir with the wish for their daughters' (and others') happiness.

I agree with other readers/listeners that this is better for those who have not been teaching very long. There are some elements that I think can apply to everyone regardless of teaching experience. I definitely appreciated the reminder for reflecting on what matters and differentiating between what is sssential and what is non-essential in both of our work and our daily lives. Overall, I still would recommend this book to any educator who is looking for ways to balance one's life and change their frame of mind for how they approach their classroom workload.

I'll be honest, I was at first sceptical of this book, but after listening, I can state without hesitation that I highly recommend this book. The narration is similar to that of a seminar or TED talk, which made listening much more interesting in my opinion. Brown's theory behind vulnerability and the ways we can make adjustments in our lives to make huge transformations in the level of our happiness + the happiness of those closest to us, is truly thought-provoking and eye-opening. Brown's openness about her own struggles with vulnerability, shame, and the social confines of our society that can be detrimental to our mental wellbeing, are all very relatable.
