Aside from the fact this is like the tenth time this author has worn a minority’s identity a mask; the writing is bland and uninspiring, the horror ineffective, the nods to other cultures feel like preschool construction paper masks with the weakest possible research and the sex scenes feel exhaustingly voyeuristic, as though the author is more interested in making the characters sexuality and gender into a wink and nudge joke than trying to represent anything. Honestly it’s just a bad book.

I loved this book; it’s incredibly well written and stares hard into the face of hate that pretends to be love, and the insidious and quiet cultism rife in our culture.

Super fun book; if you’re a fan of the Magnus Archives and like stories with queer characters but aren’t in the mood for bedroom spice, pick this one. It’s a horror but also touches gently on social issues and our willingness to forget the untidy aspects of not fitting in to the life style we’re sold, and the importance of social bonds.

I liked this book at the start but somehow knew I was going to love it when we got to the carved carrot. (You’ll know when you get there). It’s a brilliant bit of writing that lets you know politics and treachery are happening without loosing the focus on the fantastically human fantastically-imperfect- characters.

This is my third attempt with this popular author and I’m not sure why I expected her to get better. Hard DNF as she lingers lovingly over child deaths, refers to a mother as being “histrionic and over dramatic “ regarding child death, and in the same couple paragraphs, gently sighs over how this -poor man- who couldn’t stay married because clearly all his exes were hussies, but a woman who likewise has been divorced and remarried multiple times she treats as trashy and loose. It’s incredibly tasteless.

I wanted to like this book so much more than I did, the concept sounded super cool, but I’m just tired at this point of listening to a bunch of men (seriously I think she’s almost the only female character that survives the book or isn’t unhinged for drama purposes, definitely the only one that got more than a chapter of screen time...) repeatedly noting that she’s “broken” or that she can’t do the things she keeps demonstrating she definitely can. (And then the other characters develop rapid selective amnesia apparently). Also equally tired of her relatives insisting she has unspecified problems that make her “unstable” in ways that sound like the old historical thing where you could mutter vaguely that anything about a woman was just her being “hysterical”. It’s just exhausting to read about and sucked the joy out of continuing.

I love Riordan, and I really wanted to have a version of this story to listen to on the move and not just on my kindle... but now feel like I made a massive mistake. I couldn't get more than a couple minutes into the first chapter without a full body cringe at the narrator's voice and style. This is a great book by a great author, read by someone who has the intonation of someone trying to read a picture book while pinching his nose. I couldn't stand to continue and listen to him savage the dramatic parts with a dull machete and immediately removed the book from my downloaded books.

I can only hope that as a narrator he improves in later times, but will be highly reluctant to give him another go. Either way, I've certainly learned to go read reviews before taking a chance on a book, in the apparently mistaken assumption that the publishers will put effort into matching an excellent book with an equally excellent narrator.

I picked this one up after listening to "Silver Eyes", and I want to say it's not terrible... but it could be better. It could be considerably better. I've read really good fanfic, and this is fairly mediocre and very stiff. The author lingers over unnecessary details, and forced, artificial introductions. When we are introduced to side characters, for example, it's basically a laundry list of full names, and for dialogue... leave it that the authors favorite words are "Said" and "Announced" but mostly "Said."

And details like 'I'm pretty sure that's not how a frontal lobe injury works' throw off suspension of disbelief the way poor pronunciation and monotone dialogue make it very hard to feel any tension while the FNAF critters are on the move.

If you just want a light listen, or to hear FNAF pretty much turned into an awkward attempt at a scare you might hear from someone holding a flashlight under their chin and making things up as they go, try this one, but it's just not that good. Listen to Silver Eyes if you want an actually scary FNAF story that has characters that don't feel more artificial than the Animatronics themselves.

I've been a major fan of this series since my sister and I discovered it years ago, and it feels like I never stop discovering things about it. I've gotten behind on it though thanks to various life events, so I decided to pick up from the beginning on my kindle and save myself having to buy new hard copies. Then on a whim I decided to take a chance on the Audible version, since I was offered the discounted price as an add on.

While I find the narrator has ALL of the Atevi speak with an measured slowness I've never pictured in them as characters (Especially Illisidi, who while she appreciates the past, also doesn't strike me as a lady to mince about when she could pin you to the wall with a few choice syllables instead)

Still it's fun to be able to put this on and listen, and a nice change from my podcasts at work (I love podcasts, and there are some excellent ones out there like Tanis, but it's nice to not have to wait on a bi-weekly schedule to get some good fiction going on when I'm doing things.)

I'd recommend this book to pretty much anyone, especially people who love an great immersive world and complicated interpersonal relationships, and intrigue. There's no shortage of motives, hidden motivations and not so hidden ones, and all of them are fantastically written.
