Historia
As the climate veers toward catastrophe, the innumerable losses cascading through the biosphere make vividly evident the need for a metamorphosis in our relation to the living land. For too long we've inured ourselves to the wild intelligence of our muscled flesh, taking our primary truths from technologies that hold the living world at a distance. This audiobook subverts that distance, drawing listeners ever deeper into their animal senses in order to explore, from within, the elemental kinship between the body and the breathing Earth.

It’s extra, like guacamole 🥑
Revisado: 02-10-25
At the present moment of the earths unfolding an intellectual exhaled an abundance of words that seemed to undulate into an intoxicating sensory explosion of reflections on human kinds treatment of the cerulean planet they currently inhabit.
It’s poetic, drawn out, woo hoo, and you’ll probably wonder why the author just didn’t say “Hey folks, treat the planet better because it’s going to hell in a hand basket 🧺.” If you love a lot of flowery writing this is for you.

Beautiful Writing but A Bit Flat in Storyline/historical context
Revisado: 02-02-25
This novel is beautifully written. The first half of it really drew me in. The MC half heartedly attends a protest with a friend and things go bad from there, permanently bonding the friends. From there it does begin to meander and become repetitive. I wish more had been explored about the history of the region and not as much intellectualizing over the MC thoughts/feelings. There’s a very subdued writing style throughout that is lovely but can feel flat at times. With that being said, I do recommend you read/listen to it. I enjoyed the narration.

Historia
After years away from her family's homeland, and healing from an affair with an established director, stage actress Sonia Nasir returns to Palestine to visit her older sister Haneen. Though the siblings grew up spending summers at their family home in Haifa, Sonia hasn't been back since the second intifada and the deaths of her grandparents. While Haneen stayed and made a life commuting to Tel Aviv to teach at the university, Sonia remained in London to focus on her burgeoning acting career and now dissolute marriage.

Hmmm 🤔
Revisado: 01-30-25
This is an important and timely topic but it’s told in a drawn out, not very interesting manner. The characters are not well developed and have constant, somewhat boring misunderstandings. I really wanted to love this one but unfortunately I didn’t.

Historia
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

Good but too obvious in its agenda
Revisado: 01-28-25
The story of Lexington and Jarret is really good but Theo and Jess are written in such an obvious way. The author does not trust the reader to get the correlation between the racism going on today and the slavery of the past. We are told (not just shown) repeatedly, like we are dumb to what’s going on and the writing trips all over itself and its agenda during the final chapters. I appreciate the message in the novel but there is a nuance missing, otherwise it would have been a five star read/listen for me.

Powerful, Tough Listen
Revisado: 01-26-25
To truly understand the depth of this novel, I believe it will take several readings. Han Kang is a masterful, complex, sometimes confusing storyteller. We Do Not Part, like Human Acts, is a documenting of atrocities that took place in Korean history. It is masterfully set up almost as a dream like ghost story, when a close friend calls on the MC to save her bird after being hospitalized. She has severed her fingers and her beloved Budgie will not survive without care. There is a palatable tension throughout the MC’s journey to get to the island in a snowstorm. From there research papers are found on the massacre that took place.
I will not give anymore details away as I feel it is best to read them within the novel. This is a tough read. The MC is suffering with suicide ideations/depression and the atrocities that have taken place within her country. It does not shy away from the descriptive truth of the massacre, including the killing of children but there is also a masterful lightness to her sentences and comparisons to birds, snow, black logs, matches slowing burning out, trees that look human, etc. that makes it all digestible.
We do not part from remembering the people or what happened to them after reading this beautiful novel. And you will sadly question humanity and the evil humans are capable of.

Soon she will show herself to be the key to the others’ escape and survival in the strange world that awaits them above ground.

Historia
In the winter of 2009, Rachel Cusk’s marriage of 10 years came to an end. Candid and revelatory, Aftermath chronicles the perilous journey as the author redefines herself and creates a new version of family life for her daughters. She discovers previously unknown strengths and freedoms, but also finds herself suddenly vulnerable to outsiders, unwelcome advice, social displacement, and the absence of a clear authority. The pressure to reconstruct a “normal” life for her daughters competes with the sense that nothing feels normal at all.

Insightful
Revisado: 01-03-25
A raw account of the aftermath and fallout of separation and divorce from the authors perspective. It’s brittle, messy, rambling at times but also insightful. Divorce isn’t pretty and Cusk will definitely make you uncomfortable with her thoughts. If you need the “dirty details or why” of the divorce this isn’t the book for you.

Historia
Portraying himself as a failure, the protagonist of Osamu Dazai’s NO LONGER HUMAN narrates a seemingly normal life even while he feels himself incapable of understanding human beings. His attempts to reconcile himself to the world around him begin in early childhood, continue through high school, where he becomes a “clown” to mask his alienation, and eventually lead to a failed suicide attempt as an adult. Without sentimentality, he records the casual cruelties of life and its fleeting moments of human connection and tenderness.

Not sure if I’d recommend
Revisado: 01-02-25
It’s definitely an eye opening account of one man’s struggle with depression, masking, probable personality disorders, and feeling like an outsider. The man was such a user that I struggled to feel anything for him. Depression and other mental health issues are a struggle and unfortunately these are some of the behaviors that manifest.

Historia
On the island of Sicily amid the Peloponnesian War, the Syracusans have figured out what to do with the surviving Athenians who had the gall to invade their city: they’ve herded the sorry prisoners of war into a rock quarry and left them to rot. Looking for a way to pass the time, Lampo and Gelon, two unemployed potters with a soft spot for poetry and drink, head down into the quarry to feed the Athenians if, and only if, they can manage a few choice lines from their great playwright Euripides. Before long, the two mates hatch a plan to direct a full-blown production of Medea.

Bland with irritatingly simple dialogue
Revisado: 12-28-24
This reads like an angsty children’s book but with alcohol. The reader also has a child’s voice and cadence emphasizing the juvenile feel of this book. I do feel sad for people who go through life like this 🥲
