Historia
Many people grapple with destructive thought processes or a "critical inner voice" that directs their behavior and, to varying degrees, limits their lives. Using deeply personal and very human stories based on his own clinical practice, noted psychologist Robert W. Firestone illustrates the struggles of his clients to give words to this "enemy within", and in the process overcome its damaging influence.

Great idea, but book is long and wandering
Revisado: 03-13-24
The idea of acting out the voices in our heads in the second person is a great one. All you really needed was the first striking story to get it. The next few chapters were somewhat helpful, but soon the book veered into the bizarre and author-gratification. This idea could be told in such a shorter space with a few more instructions and been much more effective.

How can we ever be sure that we really know the other? To test the limits of our ability to inhabit lives that are not our own, Charles Foster set out to know the ultimate other: the nonhumans, the beasts. And to do that, he tried to be like them, choosing a badger, an otter, a fox, a deer, and a swift.

I wanted to like it more
Revisado: 11-13-23
I was very excited about the premise of this book, and I loved the first section about being badger, which he awesomely did with his young son. That part was inspiring. But after that I felt like I was taken down a depressing path into the authors emotions, sarcasm and dark world view and hardly ever got back into an animal again. Also I was not enamored of how often he seemed to need to mention genitals. Maybe a guy would be less sensitive to that.

Historia
Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn". One hundred years after its author’s death, this classic remains remarkably modern and poignantly relevant. In this new edition, Elijah Wood reads Huck in a youthful voice that may be the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent. His performance captures the excitement and confusion of adolescence and adventure.

Great classic, really well read
Revisado: 10-12-23
Can't argue with this classic book, and the narrator does a great job with accents and drama. I listened through with hardly a break.

Pretty interesting story, didn't like narrator
Revisado: 10-12-23
This was interesting enough, though at times it was a lot more about the logistics of photographing bats in inaccessible places on deadlines than about the bats themselves, which I would have preferred to hear more of.
Also, the narrator has a voice I found irritating, not just because of his grating tone, but because he has this cadence where he very often drops his volume on the last word in a sentence and you just can't hear it. That was seriously annoying, especially when it was an unfamiliar word like the name of a strange city in Southeast Asia or something. It was bad enough that when i listened to a sample of another book i really wanted to listen to and realized it was this guy, i decided sadly I couldn't go through another whole book of him again and didn't get it. This book was interesting enough that I gritted my teeth and listened to the end, but I could never do it again.

It was slow and plodding, repetitive. I kept thinking she was going somewhere helpful, but she never did.

Loved it. The twists and turns keep you wondering, and the ending is beautiful, not at all what you might have expected. The writing is gorgeous.
