Historia
Imagine an America very similar to our own. It's got homework, best friends, and pistachio ice cream. There are some differences. This America has been shaped dramatically by the magic, monsters, knowledge, and legends of its peoples, those Indigenous and those not. Elatsoe lives in this slightly stranger America. She can raise the ghosts of dead animals, a skill passed down through generations of her Lipan Apache family. Her beloved cousin has just been murdered in a town that wants no prying eyes. But she is going to do more than pry.

Another AMAZING story !
Revisado: 10-15-24
I first read “Snake Falls to Earth” and fell in love with the author’s storytelling. Elatsoe is another mystical narrative about magical Lipan Apache people. Amazing narration, too. I can hardly wait to listen to the prequel!

Historia
Perry Firekeeper-Birch was ready for her Summer of Slack but instead, after a fender bender that was entirely not her fault, she’s stuck working to pay back her Auntie Daunis for repairs to the Jeep. Thankfully she has the other outcasts of the summer program. Together they ace obstacle courses, plan vigils for missing women in the community, and make sure summer doesn’t feel so lost after all. But when she attends a meeting at a local university, Perry learns about the “Warrior Girl”, an ancestor whose bones and knife are stored in the museum archives, and everything changes.

So good but I still have questions -Spoiler alert
Revisado: 06-22-24
I loved the plot, Perry’s character, how the author tied together NAGPRA and MMIW, and, just like the first novel FKD, all the Anishnaabe cultural and language references. The mystery was great, but maybe too good because I still have questions: about where Stormy went during the heist, who injured Erik and Tom, who killed the first Native woman, and what happened to the creep in the end? Sorry for any potential spoilers but I felt like the end was rushed. Loved the rest though!

Living at the limits of our ordinary perception, mosses are a common but largely unnoticed element of the natural world. Gathering Moss is a beautifully written mix of science and personal reflection that invites listeners to explore and learn from the elegantly simple lives of mosses.

Slow, steady, and simply beautiful just like mosses

Robin’s voice never ceases to soothe me even when she discusses the most heart wrenching destruction of Mother Earth. Poetic, Indigenous Scientific Knowledge mixed with Western Biology is the medicine she offers which we desperately need to heal our world. #supportindigenousauthors

Historia
What would it be like to live in a well-rested world? Far too many of us have claimed productivity as the cornerstone of success. Brainwashed by capitalism, we subject our bodies and minds to work at an unrealistic, damaging, and machine‑level pace—feeding into the same engine that enslaved millions into brutal labor for its own relentless benefit. In Rest Is Resistance, Tricia Hersey, aka the Nap Bishop, casts an illuminating light on our troubled relationship with rest and how to imagine and dream our way to a future where rest is exalted.

Powerful message
Revisado: 10-22-23
This is such a powerful message. I wish it had been condensed or edited down more concisely. There is a lot of repeated information and word choices which made it painful, and almost like work instead of rest, to make it through to the end. Again, the message is 100% potent, but there needed to be more editing. I also wish there was more information on restful work: work that you love and that refreshes you instead of drains you.

Historia
In this groundbreaking book, therapist Resmaa Menakem examines the damage caused by racism in America from the perspective of trauma and body-centered psychology. My Grandmother's Hands is a call to action for all of us to recognize that racism is not only about the head but about the body, and introduces an alternative view of what we can do to grow beyond our entrenched racialized divide.

I had to stop after the puppy murder analogy
Revisado: 05-08-23
I got more than half way through the book. I agree that the tone taken with law enforcement didn’t age well, and that terms like “red and yellow bodies” was very disappointing. I found the exercises helpful and the text informative.
That is, until out of nowhere during Chapter 12 or 13 the author, without notice or a trigger warning, sets up a scenario where the read is feeling so safe holding a soft puppy followed by a very violent description of Resmaa beating the puppy to death with a hammer. I understand he is addressing trauma in the book, but that scenario, even if fictitious, was traumatic for me! He follows by saying, “Use the settling practices you learned to move through your feelings of this scenario. We’ll talk about this more later.” …. Huh?? You just told a horrifying, very detailed story of you beating a puppy to death with a hammer and I’m just supposed to listen to that (once I realized where it was going, I skipped to the end) and then do some breathing exercises and move on like normal??
The point is to heal existing trauma, not create more trauma just for the sake of using healing exercises!!
