I was interested and curious until…
Revisado: 02-09-22
Wow. To be honest, I’m feeling a bit nauseated. I’ve been listening to this book and was finding it very interesting and refreshing. I’m not a Christian in the organized religion sense, and I didn’t realize this was by a Christian author when I bought it. But I was fine with the religious stuff. UNTIL…
In the chapter The High Cost of Doing You, she began talking about abortion, transgender kids, and non-monogamy in a way that felt judgmental and for me, it took away from the message in her book. I am open and want to hear different perspectives, but the idea that those things are inherently wrong because it’s in the “cult of self-affirmation” (an idea I was curious about) feels hypocritical and not taking into consideration other peoples’ different relationships with God.
Honestly, to even describe my feelings about this would take a very long time and I’m a bit overwhelmed by the sharp turn this book took.
I am imagining many people here will not like this review and that’s okay. I just wanted to share my perspective and maybe it will resonate with someone else. I feel like there could be an in-depth conversation about all of this - and I give the author a lot of credit for writing something that can create such deep thought!

Historia
From the New York Times best-selling author of The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck and Get Your Sh*t Together comes more straight talk about how to stand up for who you are and what you really want, need, and deserve - showing when it's okay to be selfish, why it's pointless to be perfect, and how to be "difficult". Being yourself should be easy, yet too many of us struggle to live on other people's terms instead of our own. Rather than feeling large and in charge, we feel little and belittled.

Thank goodness for a self-help book that cracks me up!
Revisado: 08-23-18
Sarah Knight is so refreshing as an ”anti-guru”. I'm a therapist, so I read self-help and psychology-based books all the time to get ideas for clients (and myself, of course). But nothing has made me laugh quite like this book (and her others). I appreciate her vulnerability, humility, and honesty. And it's fantastic that this audiobook is read by her!

Historia
If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves - and the world - for the better.

Didn’t get much from it
Revisado: 04-02-18
I’m bummed that I didn’t like this book. I’m rarely one to not get *something* from the books I read and don’t tend to give negative reviews. But this book was a disappointment. I probably missed the fact that it was written by a NAVY S.E.A.L. - or at least didn’t realize that everything in the book was about that. So it didn’t feel transferable to regular daily life. It would have been nice to have some real like examples or something. Also, it was repetitive. To the point that I wondered if something was wrong with my audible book and it was jumping around to things I’d already heard before. And honestly, the other tips were basic things. Basically, make your bed and be brave. I was also a little surprised by his use of “Dare Greatly” with no acknowledgement to Brené Brown. Yes, I’m aware that “Dare Greatly” is actually from Theodore Roosevelt’s “Man in the Arena”, but it has very much become Brené Brown’s work, so I would think some mention of her would have been good.

A bit redundant
Revisado: 08-01-17
The advice and tips in here were somewhat helpful (although there wasn't much that was new or different from most books. Yes, she comes at it from the perspective of someone who wasn't good at organizing - a self-described "slob" - but still, the advice wasn't life-changing.
But I've also read a lot of these types of books, so maybe it would be good for people who haven't.
The thing that was the most frustrating is that the book could have been half the length, if not less. She just repeats herself and the same ideas over and over again. I skipped through so much of the book because of it - which I rarely ever do. And the chapters weren't really organized. They kind of just blended together. I think she spent two or three chapters on the bathroom alone - but only talked about a few tips.
I should mention that I rarely write reviews - especially negative ones. I can usually find good nuggets inmost books, and I seem to be able to tolerate a lot more than other folks - from reviews I read about other books that I thought were great.
So yeah. That.
I will say that I like her energy and her honesty.

Revisado: 04-11-17
Stop what you're doing and listen to this book! It's a game-changer. It's paradigm-shifting. Yes, those are dramatic words, but it really is. I'm a therapist and a self-help junkie, so I've got a lot of things to compare it to. I've been using this technique and telling my clients about it - I'm just amazed at how much it's shifted for us already!
Plus, I do highly recommend this audio version because it's read by the author (I love it when books are), and she's so fantastic to listen to! Not necessarily because of her voice, but because it truly feels like she's just chatting with you. Yes, she's reading her book, but it is clear that she's also ad-libbing and making it completely natural. There are times where she'll mess up her words - and that wasn't edited out. I LOVE IT! There's something really refreshing about that in our world of editing to perfection.
I am going to re-listen to this book often as a reminder, and I will buy it digitally and in print. It's that important and I want to really get the practice of The Five Second Rule wired into my brain!

What if everything you ever wanted isn't what you actually want? Twenty-something, suit-clad, and upwardly mobile, Joshua Fields Millburn thought he had everything anyone could ever want. Until he didn't anymore. Blindsided by the loss of his mother and his marriage in the same month, Millburn started questioning every aspect of the life he had built for himself. Then, he accidentally discovered a lifestyle known as minimalism...and everything started to change.

Not a fan of the narration
Revisado: 10-19-16
I usually can handle all different types of narrators, and don't find as many of them annoying as it seems that other people do from the many reviews I read.
But, this one - this one was frustrating to listen to, unfortunately. First of all, I really don't understand why in the world they would hire a person with a British accent to represent two guys from the Midwest. It is just weird. I feel that the narration of a memoir should sound like the author of the author doesn't do it themselves.
With the English accent, it gives the book a style that doesn't actually match with it. Maybe the authors really wanted this guy to do the narration - I don't know.
I'm sure this narrator would be good with other books, although in the beginning of the book the way he lowered his voice at the end of each sentence was driving me batty. But I stopped noticing it after awhile, so I don't know if he stopped doing it or if I just got used to it.
Then there's the weird moments where the narrator is playing the other author's voice and jumps in with a similar voice, but just recorded at a different level, or something. Very confusing.
So my suggestion is if you don't mind reading books instead of listening to them, this one may be better in the written version.
Otherwise, the content of the book is fine - although you could watch their documentary film and read their blogs to get a lot of it, really.

Historia
In The Anatomy of a Calling, Lissa Rankin, MD, makes a simple yet revolutionary claim: We are all, every single one of us, heroes. We are all on what Joseph Campbell calls "a hero's journey"; we are all on a mission to step into our true nature and fulfill the assignment our souls were sent to Earth to fulfill. Navigating the hero's journey, Dr. Rankin argues, is one of the cornerstones of living a meaningful, authentic, healthy life.

You have a fulfilling job, a great group of friends, the perfect apartment, and no shortage of dates. So what if you haven’t found The One just yet? Surely he’ll come along, right? But what if he doesn’t? Or even worse, what if he already has, but you just didn’t realize it? Lori Gottlieb said the unthinkable in her March 2008 article in The Atlantic: Maybe she, and single women everywhere, needed to stop chasing Prince Charming and instead go for Mr. Good Enough.

Revisado: 02-17-16
I loved this book. As a 40-year old single woman and as a psychotherapist and coach.
It's the best relationship/dating book I've read since reading Attached four years ago. That's say a lot, especially since I've recommended Attached to hundreds of people.
I highly highly recommend this book to any women who are single, dating, married, in a relationship, etc. - it is definitely geared towards heterosexual women, but I imagine some of it could apply to lesbian women, too.
