Historia
A born naturalist and a fearless traveler, Vladimir Dinets wrote travel guides, conducted field research, and lived a couple of lives before he was accepted into the PhD program in zoology at the University of Miami. He thought crocodiles were a dead-end research topic - survivors from the age of the dinosaurs but not much else - until he witnessed groups of up to seventy alligators performing mating choruses that included infrasound vibrations - a form of communication extremely rare in nature.

Historia
Alongside a lively tour of traditional moral reasoning from thinkers like Plato, Mill, and Kant, Rieder posits new questions and exercises about the unique conundrums we now face, issues that can seem to transcend old-fashioned philosophical ideals. Should you drink water from a plastic bottle or not? Drive an electric car? When you learn about the horrors of factory farming, should you stop eating meat or other animal products? Do small commitments matter, or are we being manipulated into acting certain ways by corporations and media?

Interesting, but ultimately useless.
Revisado: 08-06-24
The author perfectly outlines many significant problems we're facing today, however, he offers less than clear guidance in how to deal with them. His solution amounts to "do what you feel you can do." Great, but this leaves the door open for many of us skirt our responsibility to the planet and to society. Humans are masters at justifying our actions. We can always find reasons for inaction or minimal action. This becomes most obvious when the author relays all the perfectly viable reasons for not procreating, but then admits to producing a child because his wife wanted to. He offers justification for this decision, but his arguments seem weak and hypocritical in the face of all the reasons he lays out for not having children. Overall this book encapsulates everything that is wrong with philosophy in general. Philosophers are great at identifying problems, presenting interesting questions, and clarifying language and terms, but are ill-equipped to offer any real solutions.

In this informed, incisive, and passionate commentary on the state of nature and conservation, Mark Avery reflects on our relationship with the wildlife around us. From the cats that pass through his garden to the chronic decline of farmland wildlife, from the Pasqueflowers he visits every spring to the proportion of national income devoted to saving nature–everything is connected, and everything is considered.

better than I expected

Because the author focuses on conservation issues in the UK, I wasn't sure if the arguments would be relative to the US, where I live. Surprisingly, his arguments were insightful and pertinent to not only the US, but likely many developed countries. I highly recommend it.

food for thought
Revisado: 01-09-23
I did disagree with author on several points and I do think she could benefit from a better ecological education, but overall, I thought the book did a good job at dissecting some pretty difficult philosophical concepts. Most pertinent, in my opinion, was the discussion about the merits of individual suffering versus species loss. This is something I've given a lot of thought to but have yet to come up with a satisfying answer.

overly optimistic
Revisado: 10-18-22
it's a decent enough intro to rewilding, but it lacks nuance and is overly optimistic. I'm not opposed to creating novel ecosystem if it preserves and increases ecosystem processes, but introducing species that are not native to an ecosystem or haven't existed in that ecosystem for several thousand years could result in the introduction of invasive species. lots of ecological modeling would need to be conducted to ensure native species don't decline.
