Historia
Sharp-tongued (and secretly soft-hearted) Kiki Banjo has just made a huge mistake. As an expert in relationship-evasion and the host of the popular student radio show Brown Sugar, she’s made it her mission to make sure the women of the African-Caribbean Society at Whitewell University do not fall into the mess of “situationships”, players, and heartbreak. But when the Queen of the Unbothered kisses Malakai Korede, the guy she just publicly denounced as “The Wastemen of Whitewell,” in front of every Blackwellian on campus, she finds her show on the brink.

I downloaded this book per the recommendation of JalessaReads from IG and was not disappointed! I really enjoyed the theme of female empowerment combined with male evolution. Hope to see more about the rest of the crew; BRAVA!

Historia
In her heralded first novel, Gloria Naylor weaves together the stories of seven women living in Brewster Place, a bleak-inner city sanctuary, creating a powerful, moving portrait of the strengths, struggles, and hopes of black women in America. Vulnerable and resilient, openhanded and openhearted, these women forge their lives in a place that in turn threatens and protects—a common prison and a shared home. Naylor renders both loving and painful human experiences with simple eloquence and uncommon intuition in this touching and unforgettable listen.

This was very good! The plot did seem to get a bit clunky towards the middle with the introduction of unexpected new characters; however, that didn’t stop it from being a great story with a SUPER cute ending. Hope to read more from this author—BRAVA!

Entertaining & Cute
Revisado: 10-02-24
What a cute & entertaining HR nightmare (no, SERIOUSLY, how is the head of HR not unemployed after this?! 🤣) Enjoyed it from beginning to end. The fact that Coco voiced more than one character made it difficult to parse out who was speaking when in some parts. That said, I really enjoyed this story, and I hope more get made!

Revisado: 09-18-24
This was such a blessing to listen to! I have loved Stevie Wonder since I was a child, so hearing the backstory behind all these phenomenal albums was a real treat! Just to be a fly in the room as this was being recorded would have been lovely; thank you to Wesley and the entire production team for putting this together, and for Mr. Stevie Wonder for allowing it. 💜

YES, AALIYAH—you ARE the problem 🙄😫😠
Revisado: 08-02-24
I am so mad at this story I could scream! It was bad enough being as long as it was with such unnecessary scene detail (like this entire story could have been told in half the time, which is wild for me to say being that I LOVE a good long read!). But beyond that my issue is with the main character: I have NEVER seen a book heroine be so obtuse, and work so hard to misunderstand every single part of her growing relationship with a man than I did reading this book! Thankfully Wesleigh did her thing with the narration bcuz had it not been for her I might’ve done a DNF—this girl was either ACTUALLY stupid or written stupidly, and either way it upset me and my homegirls 😩
It took a whole half a book for Aaliyah to interact weekly with this man and not even think to question why he somehow kept bringing her into his personal space and being EXTRA flirty and attentive to her but never once introducing her to his wife. Like, she had all the sense in the world to question all the other men she’s dating, but not the one who is OUTRIGHT flirting with her and introducing her to his friends with NO introduction TO said wife? Ain’t no GOOD married Black man doing all THAT ish as a “friend” without his wife’s input unless he’s poly!
AND THEN, once she finds out that “OMG HE ‘lied’” (but only because she ran with an unchecked assumption), she then spends the second half of the book RUNNING from this man & holding a ridiculous grudge against under the guise that “he was supposed to be my friend!” and the false lie that “he doesn’t even want me”, even though she NEVER ONCE verifies any of this, and ALL of his behavior consistently demonstrates otherwise. It’s like…there’s no way this girl can be this freaking dense, and yet as soon as I think she seems finally over her nonsense, here a new thing comes up!
I am not usually EVER a fan of plots that are progressed by miscommunication, so the fact that this ENTIRE book is based on that makes me want to toss it DEEP into a fire and get my credit back.
I REALLY wanted to root for this book AND this girl, but the truth is that she really didn’t deserve Ahmad. Both her AND her friend need therapy and to grow the hell up.

Good read; however…
Revisado: 07-31-24
Maggie is either stupid or the tension in this story is forced, because so much of it DID NOT make sense. The story is supposed to be about a woman trying to decide between two “equal” potential suitors; however, while she’s going through all this mental anguish it’s so clear that one of her choices is LITERALLY perfect for her, and the other one is marginal except for the fact that he has money. Combined with her incredible selfishness, immaturity and the weird frenemy style relationship she seems to have with Savvy, it felt really difficult to root for Maggie’s relationship success, even if imperfect people deserve love too.
That said, I do enjoy this author’s work and look forward to reading her other stories.
