Widely-celebrated author Sinan Antoon's fourth and most sophisticated novel follows Nameer, a young Iraqi scholar earning his doctorate at Harvard, who is hired by filmmakers to help document the devastation of the 2003 invasion of Iraq. During the excursion, Nameer ventures to al-Mutanabbi street in Baghdad, famed for its bookshops, and encounters Wadood, an eccentric bookseller who is trying to catalogue everything destroyed by war, from objects, buildings, books and manuscripts, flora and fauna, to humans.

I rained
Revisado: 05-23-23
if you've read the book, you'll understand "I rained. " this book is lyrical, heart wrenching and honest. I love the main character and his girlfriend. the colloquies are breath taking. what a tribute to a country ravaged by a senseless war. I'm going to buy a hard copy of this so I can linger over the poems. narrator is excellent

Historia
In an abandoned mansion at the heart of Barcelona, a young man, David Martin, makes his living by writing sensationalist novels under a pseudonym. The survivor of a troubled childhood, he has taken refuge in the world of books and spends his nights spinning baroque tales about the city's underworld. But perhaps his dark imaginings are not as strange as they seem, for in a locked room deep within the house lie photographs and letters hinting at the mysterious death of the previous owner.

Historia
In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is planned - from the layout of the winding roads to the colors of the houses to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules. Enter Mia Warren - an enigmatic artist and single mother - who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenage daughter, Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons.

rich white people versus everybody else.
Revisado: 03-07-18
of course it's more nuanced than that. What makes a true mother? What right do we have to possess our children? Who gets to decide. when are our very best efforts not enough. Mia, the artist, the kind mom. Everyone is drawn to her and yet her daughter resists changes which are inevitably part of the mystery that comes with being in the family. Mrs Richardson, the control freak, the entitled one. But of course she has value as well. She is vindictive yet much of the time she does what she thinks is right. in a fit of anger she discovers Mia's secret yet she doesn't act on it. certainly she wreaks havoc and you hate her for it. But her Humanity still shines through. she feels so much fear and possessiveness over her youngest daughter. Izzy! who has the best internal moral compass!! she has absolutely no positive interaction with Izzy. when Izzy leaves though, she remains committed. too little too late. on the other hand, you have Mia who handles everything with so much tact & Grace. ultimately Pearl responds. Mia removes Pearl from the new life she loves, but Pearl understands even when she is angry. Mia tells Pearl everything about her past and pearl accepts it and still loves her mom. Who could ask for better.

Historia
This magnificent novel - which secured for its author the 1955 Nobel Prize in Literature - is now available to contemporary American audiences. Although it is set in the early 20th century, it recalls both Iceland's medieval epics and such classics as Sigrid Undset's Kristin Lavransdatter. And if Bjartur of Summerhouses, the book's protagonist, is an ordinary sheep farmer, his flinty determination to achieve independence is genuinely heroic and, at the same time, terrifying and bleakly comic.

Revisado: 01-24-18
the main character was extremely difficult to swallow. Yet you couldn't help but admire his boldness and his independence. the reindeer scene! beautiful blend of mysticism, superstition, realism, strength, hardship, mule headed Independence. the scene with the youngest son imagining the kitchen implements as live characters was splendid. probably the most memorable scene was the Slaughter of the ewe
