Something different
Revisado: 05-24-20
This is the perfect definition of pulp noir. The story got a little weird--especially in the middle, that's okay. Totally didn't expect it. Really enjoyed the narration. His rich tones and inflections matched the story so well and really pulled me in and kept my attention. The twists, turns and connections continued to boggle the mind as the story lines flowed into the satisfying ending. Absolutely recommend.

Historia
The rich history of Pulp stories are pure Americana. Written like a script from Film Noir movie, you are to be transported to a time in the 30's, 40's or 50's, where the liquor flowed freely and there was always a Crosley radio playing in some room off in the distance. Pulp Noir is more about a small slice or life...and usually a dark one.... Pour yourself a nice warm drink, dim the lights...conjure up in your consciousness; Femme Fatales, handguns, seedy bars, bad luck, thieves, scoundrels, a pack of Pall Mall's, low lighting, and definitely everything in glorious black and white.

Not what I hoped...
Revisado: 04-26-20
I love noir. Movies, books, television, radio/podcasts, all of it. Theater, too. Unfortunately, the narrator was all wrong for this. He has the voice of a sweet, friendly grandfather or a trusted professor, not the suave or gritty detective you hope for in these types of stories. The stories were okay. Not "speed up the sound cause I gotta know what happened" good. And to me, "just okay" is way worse than bad. I DNF'd two of the shorts--not telling which ones.

Raised in the sleepy Connecticut town of Pine Grove by an undertaker and a coroner, Paislee has seen more than her fair share of death, and she’s right at home amid the morbid and macabre. She’s happy enough to spend her last months before college cobbling together a history of the place she loves most and studying the lives of the people buried in her backyard, but when the body of a classmate turns up face down in the lake, it’s Paislee’s time to shine.

Overall, an enjoyable listen
Revisado: 04-15-20
Very entertaining story. A bit misleading. I was thinking it would be like the Mediator series by Mag Cabot. It wasn't, but it still reeled me in.
Exposition dragged out a little and there are some editing issues. The story was excellent. Fairly light, bordering on a cozy read. Would recommend.

I love this story so much.
Revisado: 06-11-19
If you've seen the movie, this is the perfect counterpart to this story. Yes, Charlie is older and not nearly as promising a prospect as depicted in the movie, and that's okay. Books usually paint people's flaws better. Make them more real and relatable, right?
The thing that makes this a must-read is the story of Tess is played out in violent detail. This is her story. She is not the damsel in waiting. However she does need help, but so does everyone else. It is a truly beautiful story.

Historia
Kevin Taylor is an Internet-famous handyman on a mission: Find a house and renovate it in 30 days. By flipping a derelict house in a month's time and chronicling the entire thing on video for his online subscribers, he seeks to become a star. The problems that plague this property will require more than elbow grease to fix, however. Shadows throughout the home are distorted, and an enigmatic trespasser keeps showing up in his footage. Worse still are the hideous voices that issue from otherwise empty rooms in the dead of night.

Huge fan of Ambrose Ibsen and Joe Hemple.
A descent into madness spiraling from greed and isolation...my favorite.
No one writes this better.
Modern day internet video angle is refreshing from the view of a mature man serious about furthering his career. Especially when mixed with classic renovations/flipping of an older home.
And combined with the low subtle twang of our narrator, we have the usual winning combination.

Short and sweet. Kept me guessing right up until the end. Fast paced and funny.
I just love a good con-lady, double cross kinda thing. No one is the good guy, but it's so light-hearted. That is just good writing, my fiends...

Totally relate to the MC.
Hard working mother trying to balance family and career while there's a killer on the loose who likes to rip off faces. Okay, maybe not relatable to the face part.
Seemed like a short story that got pulled into a higher word count with filler.

This was crazy! Love the MC.
Not at all what I thought it was going to be. Cheesy as all get out, but the best kind (that jalapeño cheese sauce that goes with concession stand nachos).
The narrator was excellent. Definitely a guilty pleasure.

Does the word endometriosis make you want to stick a fork in your eye? No? Then perhaps this book isn't for you. It's funny, and (sometimes alarmingly) frank. It contains an impressive array of synonyms for vagina and it's certainly NSFW. It's about having a devil womb and a hot knife lodged in a shoulder. It's about becoming blackly bitter and twisted in infertility, and then slowly finding a way to untwist. It's part memoir, part dark comedy, wrapped up loosely as a journal full of TMI and quirk.

Oh yeah, and funny too!
Narration was spot on in a very realistic journey into the attempt to procreate.
My favorite thing about this story was how she managed to keep a sense of humor during a tough time in a woman's life.
A privilege to listen.
