Historia
In 2002, Bill Zehme landed one of the most coveted assignments for a magazine writer: an interview with Johnny Carson—the only one he’d granted since retiring from hosting The Tonight Show a decade earlier. Zehme was tapped for the Esquire feature story thanks to his years of legendary celebrity profiles, and the resulting piece portrayed Carson as more human being than showbiz legend. Shortly after Carson’s death in 2005 and urged on by many of those closest to Carson, Zehme signed a contract to do an expansive biography.

Not Much Here
Revisado: 11-28-24
I found this to be fairly superficial and removed - and a lot of it is drawn from other sources; bios, magazine articles, etc. I got a lot more out of "Johnny Carson" by Henry Bushkin, which is a much more in depth, warts and all portrait of a very complicated dude. Bushkin was his long time lawyer, fixer and friend, and brings your right into Carson's personal life and world.

Historia
To the wider world, Al Pacino exploded onto the scene like a supernova. He landed his first leading role, in The Panic in Needle Park, in 1971, and by 1975, he had starred in four movies—The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon—that were not just successes but landmarks in the history of film. Those performances became legendary and changed his life forever. Not since Marlon Brando and James Dean in the late 1950s had an actor landed in the culture with such force.

From the archives of the American Film Institute comes a unique picture of what it was like to work in Hollywood from its beginnings to its present day. Gleaned from nearly three thousand interviews, involving four hundred voices from the industry, Hollywood: The Oral History, lets a listener “listen in” on candid remarks from the biggest names in front of the camera—Bette Davis, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Harold Lloyd—to the biggest behind it—Frank Capra, Steven Spielberg, Alfred Hitchcock, Jordan Peele, as well as the lesser known individuals that shaped what was heard and seen on screen.

A Must For Movie Lovers
Revisado: 02-14-23
The highest praise I can give any book is that I listened to it at normal speed! I find most books are read too slowly, and I usually listen at 1.3 or 1.4. This book though, I wanted to savor. It's a great history of Hollywood with a very personal POV of the many industry stars and veterans and unsung heroes behind the camera who were interviewed. The two narrators give great performances - infusing their narration with passion and energy and emotion. That said, there are an ENORMOUS amount of awful mispronounciations of names - many of which should be well known enough not to have to suffer this indignity. I hear this a lot with audio books - where are the directors? Does anyone supervising these recordings care? Is it too much trouble to make a list of names used in a book and give the narrator's the proper pronounciation? Okay, rant over. I highly recommend this book.

Historia
In the past decade, Hollywood has endured a cataclysm on a par with the end of silent film and the demise of the studio system. Stars and directors have seen their power dwindle, while writers and producers lift their best techniques from TV, comic books, and the toy biz. The future of Hollywood is being written by powerful corporate brands like Marvel, Amazon, Netflix, and Lego, as well as censors in China. Ben Fritz chronicles this dramatic shakeup with unmatched skill, bringing equal fluency to both the financial and entertainment aspects of Hollywood.

Fantastic Book - But Is Anybody Directing?
Revisado: 11-12-22
Really enjoyed this book - well reported and really well written. The sections that deal with the Sony hack and its ramifications read almost like a thriller. However, like other reviewers, I have to say that the narration, with its jaw dropping mispronunciations, was really distracting and took away from the experience. I can definitely understand how a young or unsophisticated narrator may not know (or care to learn) how to pronounce names like Menahem Golan, Warner Bros. (no, it is NOT Warner BROES!), or words like "Bona Fides" or" Wunderkind" or "St. Tropez" or even "Imminent" (!), but you have to wonder whether or not there is an adult in the room paying attention when these things are recorded. Is there no director? Are they in that much of a rush to get through these recordings that no one is willing to stop and make a correction? When you hear Warner Bros. pronounced Warner BROES literally dozens of times throughout the book you can get a little testy. They are asking people to pay for these audiobooks, so maybe a little quality control is not too much to ask for in return.

Historia
In 1968, a small, dilapidated American spy ship set out on a dangerous mission to pinpoint military radar stations along the coast of North Korea. Packed with advanced surveillance equipment and classified intelligence documents, the USS Pueblo was poorly armed and lacked backup by air or sea. Its crew, led by a charismatic, hard-drinking, ex-submarine officer named Pete Bucher, was made up mostly of untested sailors in their teens and twenties.

This is a phenomenal book; 1 part sea adventure, 1 part prison drama, 1 part political thriller, 1 part human tragedy, 1 part courtroom drama. The predicament these sailors found themselves in, and their subsequent treatment by the Navy, is expertly documented, as is the political predicament Lyndon Johnson found himself in. A great listen.

Historia
This candid and darkly witty memoir recounts an exhilarating life - and a few close brushes with death. With remarkable sangfroid and a humorist's eye for absurdity, H. K. Roy describes his many strange and risky exploits in his long career with the CIA. Whether he was pursuing Soviet and Cuban spies, running "denied area" operations in Eastern Europe, hunting Bosnian War criminals, or providing actionable intelligence to US government and coalition forces in Iraq, Roy usually found himself at the right place at the right time.

Eye opening, insightful and often hilarious.
Revisado: 02-14-21
A fascinating look behind the scenes of the CIA, told by a grounded and witty officer whose career spanned some of our most troubled times. Don't be put off by the carping in earlier reviews about "politics;" the author takes BOTH Democrat and Republican administrations to task for ignoring or politicizing CIA provided intelligence. The author has a sharp eye for the absurd, and the fantastic narration enhances the many laugh out loud moments.

Historia
In Dark Towers, award-winning journalist David Enrich reveals the truth about Deutsche Bank and its epic path of devastation. Tracing the bank's history back to its propping up of a default-prone American developer in the 1880s, helping the Nazis build Auschwitz, and wooing Eastern Bloc authoritarians, he shows how in the 1990s, via a succession of hard-charging executives, Deutsche made a fateful decision to pursue Wall Street riches, often at the expense of ethics and the law.
