Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Love love love Ray Porter's narration. The story is astonishing and engaging. Enough science to explain things, but not enough to bury you.

Great Story, niggling details were frustrating
Revisado: 05-08-24
Nailbiting, edge of the seat action. I've been binge listening all week. Next volume already in progress.
That said, some of the minor story details are a bit head scratching. Though the novels are based in Scotland. Most of the characters are native, yet, money transactions happen in dollars, not pounds. Distance, speed are given in miles, yards, not kilometers or meters. And perhaps most puzzling: the various characters (regular folks), are drinking coffee, not tea? Why?

Historia
While on patrol one foggy March evening, Bowditch receives a call for help. A woman has reportedly struck a deer on a lonely coast road. When the game warden arrives on the scene, he finds blood in the road—but both the driver and the deer have vanished. And the state trooper assigned to the accident appears strangely unconcerned. The details of the disappearance seem eerily familiar. Seven years earlier, a jury convicted lobsterman Erland Jefferts of the rape and murder of a wealthy college student and sentenced him to life in prison.

In a world where "witches, vampires, werewolves, and shape-shifters live beside ordinary people" (Booklist), it takes a very unusual woman to call it home. By day, Mercy Thompson is a car mechanic in Eastern Washington. By night, she explores her preternatural side. As a shape-shifter with some unusual talents, Mercy's found herself maintaining a tenuous harmony between the human and the not-so- human on more than one occasion. This time she may get more than she bargained for.

Stunning conclusion to the saga!
Revisado: 01-11-22
James Corey did it again!
Plugging along at an inevitable, steady pace, then dropping off a cliff you never saw coming. The reader is swept along in the roaring current bouncing off walls and rocks, then like a big river, the current slows and smooths out for a while. You're left breathless and happy to be on a well built craft. Then the riverbed narrows sharply, and everything speeds up again.
I really love the characters the author builds and getting into their heads. His scene setting is masterful as well. You can smell the machinery and people in closed spaces. Feel the pain of sudden bright light.
Jefferson Mays has done another fine performance, I know who's speaking, and what they're feeling as well.

Another amazing chapter in the saga!
Revisado: 12-16-21
Oh my goodness. I simply love this author.
Her complex and complete scene settings place you right out there on a windy, cold, hillside, where a drizzle is gradually soaking you through, or next to the hearth in a busy warm kitchen, where the scent of wet dog and baking bread are mingled with the chatter of children and voices women going about their business.
The characters are no less complex. The unfolding story of the intertwined lives of the Frazers, Gray's, MacKenzies and Murrays has been a delight.
"Watching" the children of the first book grow into adults and now seeing their children grow, has been a refuge and escape. There are always twists and turns and adventures to be had. Surprises around every corner.
That all this is woven through the thread of actual history makes it so much more engaging. I know these places.
I simply cannot bear the wait for the next volume!
