Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Narrator not my style
Revisado: 05-27-24
A bit disappointed after the first book I was going to read, rather than listen to the second, because narrator Rebecca doesn't vibe with me, but it said Teddy Hamilton was narrating, so I tried to research how much of it before buying? Didn't find much except yes he does, but turned out only the last chapter yet again?! Why even do that & list him then? To trick people like me into buying it for his name?
Rebecca doesn't do a bad job, just so anxious & catty, something clashes with my liking. Not all souls align. & the book itself has exciting parts and again a lot of juvenile fights, as Violet doesn't intereflect and Rebecca narrated that as it's meant to be. Just felt like I was in middle school again and some girl was upset with me. A lot of these books are exciting, but I don't feel on edge the whole time and anxious to finish.
Story itself good, I did find myself rewinding a few times, saying wait what happened? Thinking I missed some explanation of her epiphanies, when really she assumes we know or it wasn't clear we'd find out in a few.

sooo good. Perfect narrative too
Revisado: 05-20-24
The narrator blows me away. Not easy to do so many different accents and not have any annoying ones. Too often a wonderful story can get tainted.
Story itself keeps intriguing as well. I don't want it to be over and seems there will be at least one more.

LOVE this series
Revisado: 05-14-24
Wonderful narrator did some of the voices slightly different from first book, but no complaints really. Great story as well. Romantic but not over the top crude. Different type of story line than many fantasy novels. Five stars all around.

I loved the story, need to speed up narration
Revisado: 10-14-23
There were a few hiccups in the storyline, like: why if that "always happens", but then it didn't happen here... why if she could do this, didn't she here... but overall I loved the story and writing. I enjoy magic books and this one had some beautiful & meaningful themes.
The narrator was quite choppy. Her accent was good for the part, but it was a little like she was still learning to read in English and it was quite distracting. I suggest speeding the rate up to 1.15x or 1.20x Or reading it.
And alhough the narrator had more emotion towards the end, I wouldn't have chosen her. It's so nice when a narrator acts things out more. Adds emotion and more inflection.
Why in all these types of books is the female protagonist 17 and her magical love interest at least a century old, but he still looks young. 🙄 Is it because generally women wish when young, we could date more mature (in character) and devoted men? 😂 Too often only found in fairytales.

Good & Smart. Not too scary for us sensitives
Revisado: 05-24-23
Narrative was spot on. Story too felt so real and how she was able to put the character traits into words, very good. I really enjoyed it. Beginnings are often slow for me but eventually couldn't put it down.

Beautiful

Beautiful story of a strong woman coming to age around the American civil war. Some parts felt hard but it's not overly harsh for those of us who are more sensitive.

Good Book Great Narrator
Revisado: 02-22-23
The stories in this trilogy are great and I really really like the narrator. He does the voices so well! And he keeps interest, I don't often forget to listen with him along stretches of description. And emotions he does well too. He's a fantastic narrator. I listen to a lot of books.

Really good book
Revisado: 12-19-22
Hurts and depressing, but a really good book that makes me think of how we abuse animals for science. Because people don't believe they have a soul or matter. Has some slow parts but it also helps build the characters.
