Too Much Minutia & Bad Tropes
Revisado: 09-28-23
After hearing the first chapter, I had no idea what the book was about. There wasn't anything too exciting to reel you in. It was bursting with minutia, and I couldn't detect a storyline or plot. There's a balance that needs to be struck between minutia and actual story.
I didn't enjoy how a female character was treated. They made her out to be some whimpering scared little woman who people yell shut up at. The author descibes her totally appropriate reaction and poses her as a whiny babbling fool. The story is cold and just disappointing.

Dude Bro Book
Revisado: 09-27-23
I struggled to like it and found it difficult to continue listening. As a military man himself, I'm shocked at how the author presents his main character. Like a lost in the sauce, cowardly thing. Yes, maybe there's an arc later, but the main character is so cringe in the first chapters that you don't even like him.
The author didn't include enough descriptors, which are Important for an immersive experience. He stated things very matter of factly at times with no emotion, like when he saw the first horde of zombies. It was a lost opportunity, among many, to add words like terrifying, horrible, dark, grotesque, gaunt.
The MC's mom is in the hospital during the start of a zombiepocalypse and he doesn’t feel inclined to make sure she's ok?
There are some old tired tropes, like his mother being a "housewife". It's old and stale to pose women like this. Really, a housewife? How many military women did you serve with? We are more than housewives, stop marginalizing us.
Author writes with little to no emotions, even where it would be fitting or appropriate.
The main character reads like an early 2000s dude bro. Immature, uncaring, hollow.

Left Me Wanting More (In a Good Way)
Revisado: 09-26-23
I really loved the lore of a mythical "devil" at this place called Devil's Rock. It was brilliant and left you wanting to sink your teeth in. However, it was deflated at the last quarter of the book, when certain things revealed aren't what the reader thought. It was a plot twist for sure, but I'm not sure it made sense. A lesser developed lore is presented that somehow that became more relevant. I wish we knew what happened to two of the supporting characters since they were so integral to the entire story. The other big plot twist in the last quarter was absolutely shocking, and I still can't get over it. The ending as wild as it is open ended.
It was very interesting as a horror coming of age situation. A lot of these coming of age horrors usually revolve around young girls and sexual violence. So it was interesting to see it all with a boy's coming of age story (and no sexually creepy stuff). The other interesting thing is that there is no love story. I'm glad writers are shaking off the repetitive tropes and imagining other types of love, such as the nostalgic love for a person who is gone. It gave Stephen King, it gave losers club, it gave Lovely Bones, it gave Stand By Me...A very good read, but not if you're looking for gorecore or the supernatural.
Lastly, the narration and voice performance was amazing. I listened to his other book "A Head Full of Ghosts" and the narration is the best I've ever heard. Highly recommend.

A Beautiful Tragedy
Revisado: 09-12-23
It was creepy, surreal, thrilling, macabre. The descriptors are just delicious. It's immersive in the best way. You really have to use your own mind and decide what's what.
The way the author perfectly fit themselves in the unique mind space of the main characters was brilliant. The way innocence and loss of innocence portrayed is equal parts awesome and terrifying.
This book features a dark tone and a very young voice.
It's rich with complexities, which woven together weaves a beautifully tragic tale, The narration and voice production was excellent. Truly the best I've ever heard. BRAVO to the narrator and voice actors!
When the story is all done, you won't know how to feel about it. And you're free to make many different inferences about the final girl. I myself am bursting with theories as the book leaves off on a great cliffhanger and forms the best ending I've read in a long time. This is permanently going in my top 5. I truly hope they make a movie. It's deeply satisfying!

Can't Force Myself to Finish It
Revisado: 09-11-23
I really wanted to let myself be immersed in this world, and will this story of an ill-fated trip into a creepy forrest....BUT the voice acting was cringe to me. I tried to ignore it, but I just couldnt. I went back to the book many times and couldn't ignore the voice acting. Other people like it but it was distracting and a little strange to me. If this was offered with any other narration, I would probably enjoy the book more.

Most Important Book Ever
Revisado: 09-07-23
This is the most important book you'll ever hear or read. The author is both a skeptic and expert in her field, so all her confirmations of her Gift are authentic, relatable and solid. This will make you a believer.
