How music REALLY works
Revisado: 08-06-18
I've always liked seeing what's behind the curtain - how things work. David Byrne tells us --
1. How and why many composers write
2. How the size, shape, and decor of venues can affect the way music is heard (and why bands often prefer to play in smaller venues). Indeed, J. S. Bach's music sounds "big" because he wrote it to be played in a "big cathedral on a "big" organ
3. The ins and outs of the recording studio
4. Some personal information about himself.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and will likely listen again.

Historia
Have you ever wondered how the lives of great composers-especially when set against the social, political, and cultural context of their world-influences their music? After listening to this perceptive series of eight lectures on the life and music of Ludwig van Beethoven, you will likely find that you hear his work in an entirely different way, your insight informed by new knowledge of how Beethoven was able to create masterpieces from the crises of his life. You'll learn about the years of progressive hearing loss-ultimately to produce total deafness-and the understandable agony and rage such a fate would bring upon a composer. About his deep depression over the end of his relationship with the woman he calls his Immortal Beloved. About his pathological hatred of authority, his persecution complex, even delusional behaviors. But you'll also learn how each of these crises, and many others, served to drive Beethoven inward, to reinvent himself and redeem his suffering through art, creating disruptive works of profound passion and beauty that reinvented the nature of musical expression in the Western world.

HIS HAIR! Yes, HIS HAIR!
Revisado: 11-13-17
Those are Professor Robert Greenberg's first words in this audio book. He describes how Beethoven was a nasty, yet kind, person (in other words, a relatively normal human being). Professor Greenberg teaches in a most entertaining way.

What about Cassandra Campbell’s performance did you like?
Her voices were very realistic. I actually listened to all of the Miss Fortune books, one right after the other, because of Campbell's voices.
She is an excellent actress, and her accents seemed spot on.
Any additional comments?
The "Miss Fortune" stories are funny. I'll get the rest of them when they are released.

FBI Special Agent Matthew Roarke is closing in on a bust of a major criminal organization in San Francisco when he witnesses an undercover member of his team killed right in front of him on a busy street, an accident Roarke can't believe is coincidental. His suspicions put him on the trail of a mysterious young woman who appears to have been present at each scene of a years-long string of accidents and murders, and who may well be that most rare of killers: a female serial.

Historia
Hannah West and Elias Coppersmith have no regrets about their impulsive wedding since they can't remember it. All either can remember is that they were on the run. With Hannah's dubious background and shaky para-psych profile, she could have done much worse. The competent mining heir arouses her curiosity - as well as other parts of her mind and body. A honeymoon spent retracing their footsteps leads them into the twisting underground catacombs, where secrets from both their pasts will come to light.

Historia
It was all going so well for Peter Lee's drug empire. He had a hold on the producers in Afghanistan and Pakistan. His receiver network was increasing and the distribution was now being handled by four of the biggest gangs in London. With business so good, he was starting to expand. He was becoming very, very rich. The only small annoyance had come from a little old lady who owned of all things a corner shop.

This story is well written and I'm looking forward to Stansfield's next book-in-series on Audible.

Historia
To all appearances, Dan Chase is a harmless retiree in Vermont with two big mutts and a grown daughter he keeps in touch with by phone. But most 60-year-old widowers don't have multiple driver's licenses, savings stockpiled in banks across the country, and a bugout kit with two Beretta Nanos stashed in the spare bedroom closet. Most have not spent decades on the run.

Can't go wrong with a Jayne Castle story
Revisado: 07-19-17
Any additional comments?
Barbara Rosenblat is an excellent actor/narrator. She doesn't overdo.
Her heroine sounds like an adult, not a flirty, dingy girl. Her "men's" voices sound like men, not sixteen-year-old boys.
I truly enjoy listening to anything Barbara narrates.

The story was interesting and well written.
How could the performance have been better?
