Historia
Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

Interesting and fun

I listened to this casually over a few years and genuinely enjoyed it. Learned new things about languages, sparked some interesting discussions, and enjoyed the speaker’s storytelling and humorous bits.

Your organization's culture is the key to its success. Strategic planning is essential. People's competencies should be measured and their weaknesses shored up. People crave feedback. These may sound like basic truths of our work lives today. But actually, they're lies. As Marcus Buckingham and Ashley Goodall show in this provocative, inspiring book, there are some big lies - distortions, faulty assumptions, wrong thinking - running through our organizational lives.

As a new HR professional, I’m glad I started here. It gives a solid overview of what matters, and what doesn’t, in work. Highly recommend.

Historia
Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

Beautiful language and performance
Revisado: 05-06-20
A lovely performance by Thandie Newton, so much character and life breathed into the story. Charlotte Bronte does a wonderful job, of course—especially with her use of the English language. The conclusion of her story, however, disappoints somewhat. Later developments feel a bit rushed and forced. Overall, though, I genuinely enjoyed and connected with the story, and was particularly fond of its witticisms.

Michael Pollan, known for his best-selling nonfiction audio, including The Omnivores Dilemma and How to Change Your Mind, conceived and wrote Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern World as an Audible Original. In this controversial and exciting listen, Pollan explores caffeine’s power as the most-used drug in the world - and the only one we give to children (in soda pop) as a treat.

Sensationalized but still empowering
Revisado: 02-12-20
I have to say the first chapter was a bit like watching the home shopping network: seemingly endless sales language that made me wonder why the author didn't know I'd already started the book and almost made me want to drop it.
The book as a whole is quite sensationalized. He tells many stories but gives few named, states many facts but few references. Regardless, I did find inspiration in it. Solid points are made on using the power of projection, not shooting yourself in the foot with negative thinking, and pursuing peace and harmony.

Historia
Plenty of experts argue that anyone who wants to develop a skill, play an instrument, or lead their field should start early, focus intensely, and rack up as many hours of deliberate practice as possible. But a closer look at research on the world’s top performers shows that early specialization is the exception, not the rule. David Epstein examined the world’s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors, forecasters and scientists. He discovered that in most fields—especially those that are complex and unpredictable—generalists, not specialists, are primed to excel.
