Historia
When author Jeff Hobbs arrived at Yale University, he became fast friends with the man who would be his college roommate for four years, Robert Peace. Robert's life was rough from the beginning in the crime-ridden streets of Newark in the 1980s, with his father in jail and his mother earning less than $15,000 a year. But Robert was a brilliant student, and it was supposed to get easier when he was accepted to Yale, where he studied molecular biochemistry and biophysics.

Beautifully Written and a Compelling Story
Revisado: 03-11-25
The details were amazing. The author clearly was able to interview many of Rob’s friends and family. I also like the way the author handled his own story in an honest and modest manner. It jarred me when the narrative went to “I” when the location was Yale University but it was terrific the listen to the details. Beautifully narrated as well.

Historia
The principles of the French Revolution remain the only possible basis for a just society - even if, after more than 200 years, they are more contested than ever before. In A New World Begins, Jeremy D. Popkin offers a riveting account of the revolution that puts the listener in the thick of the debates and the violence that led to the overthrow of the monarchy and the establishment of a new society.

Historia
Months before Pearl Harbor, Franklin D. Roosevelt knew that the United States was on the verge of entering another world war for which it was dangerously ill prepared. The urgent times demanded a transformation of the economy, with the government bankrolling the unfathomably expensive task of enlisting millions of citizens while also producing the equipment necessary to successfully fight—all of which opened up opportunities for graft, fraud and corruption.

Fresh topic well executed
Revisado: 04-01-24
I was pleased to see a book on a fresh topic about Harry Truman. It was also a fresh topic about WWII. And the author does a terrific job of deep research, balanced judgements and good writing. The narration was excellent. Highly recommended fire those who want a deeper dive on Truman and American efforts in WWII.

William Randolph Hearst, known to his staff as the "Chief", was a brilliant business strategist and a man of prodigious appetites. By the 1930s, he controlled the largest publishing empire in the United States, including 28 newspapers, the Cosmopolitan Picture Studio, radio stations, and 13 magazines. He quickly learned how to use this media stronghold to achieve unprecedented political power. In The Chief, David Nasaw presents an intimate portrait of the man famously characterized in the classic film Citizen Kane.

Amazing full life
Revisado: 03-10-24
I was skeptical that the author’s biography would be as interesting as his biographies of Joseph Kennedy and Andrew Carnegie but I was wrong. WR Hearst had an amazing life. The author is one of our country’s best biographers.

Historia
On November 23, 1968, near the end of a turbulent and memorable year, there was a football game that would also prove turbulent and memorable: the season-ending clash between Harvard and Yale. Both teams entered undefeated and, technically at least, came out undefeated. The final score was 29-29. To some of the players on the field, it was a triumph; to others a tragedy. George Howe Colt’s The Game is the story of that iconic American year, as seen through the young men who lived it and were changed by it.

The Perfect Sports Book
Revisado: 03-03-24
The best sports books have great sports and are much more than just about sports. This one fits the bill. The character studies are wonderful. The one on Brian Dowling at Yale is a jewel. Lots of good humor and excellent writing.

Novel topic well done
Revisado: 01-22-24
The author highlights ten medical surgeons in the American Revolution, some well known, others not. The lesser known ones are most interesting. The author also showcases the brutality of surgical procedures without anesthesia. I was impressed that good doctors knew more about some medical issues than I thought. I recommend the book, which is written.

Historia
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

Surprisingly Good History! An Important Book!
Revisado: 01-11-24
I write history books so my standards are high. This book is excellent. I love the effort to promote the memory of those who worked to save democracy and to remember those who sought to subvert it (including US Senators and Congressmen). Books like these may cause people alive today to think twice about how they will be remembered in history. I did not appreciate the unnecessary and out of context swipe at Abraham Lincoln but it was only a sentence. Superbly narrated by Rachel.

In “the most comprehensive Garfield biography in almost fifty years” (The Wall Street Journal), C.W. Goodyear charts the life and times of one of the most remarkable Americans ever to win the Presidency. Progressive firebrand and conservative compromiser; Union war hero and founder of the first Department of Education; Supreme Court attorney and abolitionist preacher; mathematician and canalman; crooked election-fixed and clean-government champion; Congressional chieftain and gentleman-farmer; the last president to be born in a log cabin; the second to be assassinated.

Balanced and Thorough
Revisado: 11-28-23
This is an excellent review of Garfield’s life. It is not a hagiography as is a certain more popular book on the same topic. I learned a lot about the credit mobiler scandal, the fierce rivalry between roscoe Conkling and George Blaine and the spoils system. Garfield coming from such humble beginnings to such heights is amazing. The treatment of the shooting and subsequent illness was very good. Slow in places but still highly recommended and welcome.

Between 1861 and 1865, the clash of the greatest armies the Western hemisphere had ever seen turned small towns, little-known streams, and obscure meadows in the American countryside into names we will always remember. In those great battles, those streams ran red with blood-and the United States was truly born.

Makes complicated subjects simple
Revisado: 11-11-23
The professor has a great ability to synthesize and make simple complex subjects. Yet Each lecture has numerous penetrating insights. I like the fact that in addition to the military aspect he covers well the civilian home front, race, and politics. The strengths and weaknesses of each side in the war was particularly well done.

The best book on the British slave trade
Revisado: 10-15-23
This outstanding book is now the must read book for any reader/listener interested in Britain’s role in the slave trade from the 1600s to 1807. It is also superbly and efficiently written. The book could easily have been twice as long but the author possesses an economy of words. He gives equal focus to three parts of the slave trade: the acquisition of African captives in Africa; carrying the captives in the Middle Passage; and the sale of the captives by factors in slave ports and the inner-workings of the internal slave trade. This last part is hardly discussed in some slave trade books. As for the first part the author has a thorough discussion of the roles of African middlemen and the the wars that made captives available for the trade. He does not spend much time discussing the abolitionist movement. This book is about the inner workings of the slave trade, how it changed and the traders in men who profited. The author discusses the latest scholarship but without impinging on his narrative and adds many new insights of his own. The narration is excellent.
