Historia
King Solomon had all the fame and fortune that any man could want. He was the world's wisest and wealthiest king. And yet, tragically, he threw it all away for the love of money, the pleasures of sex, and the powers of an earthly kingdom. In studying the life of Solomon, we see both the true greatness and the tragic failure of our own humanity - from godly devotion to self-serving excess. Philip Graham Ryken tells us how, by the grace of God, to prevent those downfalls and to seek God's glory amid earthly temptations through this rich, Christ-centered study of the life of Solomon.

Revisado: 01-27-23
Before listening to this book, I only knew of him as the son of fames scholar Leland and the current president of Wheaton College (a Solomon figure in his own right within the Evangelical community).
However, I think he hits the nail on the head, especially for young, rich, and educated Christians facing all the attendant temptations of 21st century America. Will we follow Jesus to the end, or get seduced by money, sex, and power?

Robert Kiyosaki - author of the #1 personal finance book of all time - has built a legacy around simplifying complex and often-confusing subjects like money and investing. He continues to challenge conventional wisdom and asks the questions that will help listeners sift through today's information overload to uncover ways to assess what's real... and what isn't. And use truth and facts as a foundation for taking control of their financial lives. In this new book, Robert fights what’s "fake" and helps listeners differentiate between what’s real...and what isn’t.

Super Repetitive Book by a Big Hipocrite
Revisado: 12-13-22
I really liked the original “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” book that came out in the 1990s. I also think his warning is timely concerning runaway inflation due to governments firing up the money press and ditching the gold standard. Complex Derivatives also tanked the stock market in 2008 (CDO, Default Swaps, etc). HOWEVER, this book should have been much shorter. I’m also skeptical about his obsession with stockpiling precious metals as the only safe way. Finally, his financial wellness company just went bankrupt in 2022 due to a judgement that they should have weathered just fine. Let that one sink in. https://thecollegeinvestor.com/4726/ultimate-hypocrite-robert-kiyosaki-companys-bankruptcy/

Historia
The index fund was just one innovation fueled by The Vanguard Group founder Jack Bogle's radical idea in 1975 to make investors the actual owners of his new fund company. The end result was powerful: a fund company for the people and by the people. But Bogle's impact and this "great cost migration" reaches well beyond index funds into many other areas, such as active management, ETFs, the advisory world, quantitative investing, ESG, behavioral finance, and even trading platforms.

Fyodor Dostoyevsky is a titanic figure among the world's great authors, and The Brothers Karamazov is often hailed as his finest novel. A masterpiece on many levels, it transcends the boundaries of a gripping murder mystery to become a moving account of the battle between love and hate, faith and despair, compassion and cruelty, good and evil.

Historia
In the era of Rembrandt, Rubens, and Van Dyke, Spain had its own great painter: Diego Velasquez. His assistant is an African slave, Juan, who, by helping his master in his studio in the preparation of paints and stretching of canvasses, becomes an artist himself. Self-taught by watching his master's technique, he is torn between the need to keep his secret, for such work as the creation of art is forbidden to slaves, and the desire to reveal his own talents.

Excellent Spanish Art intro, but only somewhat “Woke”
Revisado: 03-22-21
It was published in 1967, so Juan’s portrayal might be overly accommodating to the institution of black slavery. That said, it’s a quite human book about a clever yet sensitive man trying to make the best of a very unfair life that also has some very silver linings.
But if you want an intro to Piquaresque literature, Spanish history, and Siglo de Oro art — it’s crazy good.

Historia
In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding. His starting point is moral intuition - the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong. Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right.

Historia
How did a libertine who lacks even the most basic knowledge of the Christian faith win 81 percent of the white evangelical vote in 2016? And why have white evangelicals become a presidential reprobate's staunchest supporters? Jesus and John Wayne is a sweeping account of the last 75 years of white evangelicalism, showing how American evangelicals have worked for decades to replace the Jesus of the Gospels with an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism.

For Moderate Evangelicals Wondering WTF happened
Revisado: 12-15-20
Written by an insider and filled with keen observation regarding the Graham/Falwell/Dobson/Reagan/Bush/Duggar complex. Homeschooling, purity rings, Veggietales, “boys bibles” from Tommy Nelson ... all the way to the baffling rise of Trump.
This is the story of our consumerist, militarist, and nationalist idolatry reaching its logical consequences. While most of these things were never bad in themselves, loving them over and above honoring God’s word, the humanity of our non-Christian neighbors, and objective truth has brought us to some shockingly low places.

Historia
Have we been taught to discount the veracity and deeper meaning of our emotional resonance with the world around us? In The Abolition of Man, C.S. Lewis looks at the curriculum of the English "prep school" and begins to wonder if this subliminal teaching has indeed produced a generation who discount such a nature.

A Peak of Christian Intellectualism
Revisado: 09-08-20
The Great Divorce is Lewis’ more layman-friendly text, an allegory that meditates upon the idea that Hell is not necessarily a place of “fire and brimstone”, but rather persons living out their pride and self-absorption, without eventual recognition (and submission) to the authority and blessing of timeless moral truths. In other words, God saying to sinners “okay then, THY will be done.”
Abolition of Man is less the Narnia side of Lewis, and more the Oxford lecturer. In it, he discusses the necessity of timeless truths (the “Tao”, to use the Asian term) as the basis for all scientific and moral reasoning — without it, no ethical duty can be imposed and no leader can be honestly held to account. A healthy man man honestly considers adopting a vegetarian diet, but an arrogant man snobbishly refuses to accept the biological necessity of ingesting H2O.
